Traffic tickets to cost Tennesseans more (Gotta feed the beast...)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -Tennesseans could be charged up to nearly $70 more for traffic tickets under a new state law that takes effect next month and is intended to fund crime lab services for law enforcement agencies.

The law that takes effect July 1 adds $13.75 onto each traffic violation, and motorists can be cited for as many as five violations on a single ticket.

The fee applies only to people who chose not to contest their tickets in court and pay the fine before a court date or a compliance date.

Proceeds will help offset the costs of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's crime lab services.

But motorists complain the extra charge is too much on top of already expensive fines.

Sen. Randy McNally, a Republican from Oak Ridge, sponsored the legislation, which he said was necessary to prevent massive TBI layoffs or increased costs to local law enforcement agencies that need the lab services to investigate crimes.

Take the needed money from the currently seized assets that the state LEO's confiscate from alleged drug related seizures. No wait, that money must go to further arm the many PD's SWAT teams so that they can get all decked out like RAMBO while issuing these citations to citizens and all the while hoping citizens will just make their day by looking at them cross-eyed. Get more tickets seems to be the order of business for counties short of cash. Our local Sheriff deputies were told to get between 5-8 a day. What gets me is its a mainly retired community where they have more sheriffs per square mile than the NYPD has in Manhattan. Do we need so many sheriffs? Its not like the Seniors have created a major crime area, unless you consider having a license plate frame on you car a crime. I’ve seen 4 cars at once parked in a side road where the sheriffs were apparently holding a meeting or just hanging out. ;o)
