China Warned N.Korea Against Attacking the South, Says Lee

China clearly warned North Korea that South Korea would retaliate if the North carries out another provocation, President Lee Myung-bak said Thursday.

At a lunch meeting with members of the parliamentary Defense Committee, Lee said the Chinese government informed him that the comments were "delivered to North Korea," according lawmakers who were there.

"President Lee said North Korea would not be able to carry out further acts of provocation and added that China officially notified our government that it would no longer help the North if it did that," one committee member said.

China wants status quo now. It may change its mind later. For now, it is preoccupied with engineering the soft-landing of their economy, which is a tall order. N. Korea can turn it into immediate crash landing with another ill-timed military provocation. So China has reason to rein on N. Korea now. Still, you cannot rule out the possibility that Chia Head or his junior goes against China's wishes. If China plunges into major domestic troubles, I think it will make Kim duo entertain some 'bold move.' This is especially true if U.S. gets into problems similar to China about the same time.

Without Chinese backup of the North the South would make mincemeat of the North. Glad to hear there is some sanity floating around over there.

China must have some really big $$$$ invested in the south.

It would be great to get it over with. The South wouldn’t really want to ‘take in’ the North.

Similarly, if the southerners haven’t been exploited as a political tool by the US to contain the ChiCom’s and the Stalinist’s of Asia, the country could have and would have already been unified a’la Vietnam fashion — it may have acquired such a profound taste for things as American as apple pie such that it would have given up on all things Kung Pao chicken :).
