(CNN) -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Thursday welcomed U.S. President Barack Obama's plans for a U.S. troops drawdown...

"The number of troops that he has announced to be withdrawn is a sign that Afghanistan is taking over its own security and is trying to defend its territory by its own means," Karzai said. "So we are happy about the announcement."

As the United States pulls back, Karzai painted a picture of a more stable Afghanistan, despite the fact that May was the bloodiest month for Afghan civilians since 2007.

"It is the responsibility of the Afghan people to protect their country and to provide security for the citizens of the country," Karzai said."

He said Afghanistan, dependent on U.S. dollars for security and development, was grateful to American taxpayers, but expressed dismay that U.S. humanitarian efforts have not always taken Afghan wishes into account.

He cited a Kandahar electricity project in which he said the United States spent $250 million to buy generators. Karzai said Afghanistan would have preferred the construction of a dam

History repeats...

“The number of troops that he has announced to be withdrawn is a sign that Afghanistan is taking over its own security and is trying to defend its territory by its own means,” Karzai said. “So we are happy about the announcement.”

“The number of troops that he has announced to be withdrawn is a sign that Vietnam is taking over its own security and is trying to defend its territory by its own means,” Thieu said. “So we are happy about the announcement.”

Not really a repeat. Nixon’s withdrawal was real and continous from 1969 on. Obama’s withdrawal is smoke and mirrors and Karzai knows it. Obama merely promised the partial pullback of a surge this year and full pullback next year. That “next year” is so distant that it can be easily revised.

Oh sure....Maybe by then the tax payers will be able to buy them what they really want, build that dam, maybe some swimming pools, some freeways with camel lanes, more A/C units...Maybe disassemble and ship them a few million empty, foreclosed American homes.

"Beggars can't be choosers". Karzi is not exactly one to state what should or not be given his country. Had we provided money for a dam you can be sure it would not have been built and the money funneled to him and his thugs. He is not to be trusted one iotta. Providing generators ment that those who needed them got them.

We should have never begun nation building there. The people are not capable of maintaining what is given or built for them...you can bet in no time the tribal wars will again be an everyday occurance and their country in a shambles once again for that. Therefore any buildings will be destroyed just as they have in the past. Afhganistan leadership cannot change the mindset of the people....and they have little desire of doing so.

The most any can do for Afghanistan is contain the wars that will errupt once we are out of there.

We didn't have time to do an EPA study to see if any endangered species would be affected.

Karzai, shut up.

I have a Brother-in-Law risking his life in that man’s country. I’m so angry that my eyes are watering. There isn’t a single person in that crap hole worth him getting a sun burn for, much less losing his life.

And then, of course, they’ll be blaming the U.S.

I will take him at his word. Let the ethnic cleansing begin. Now that he has his police force in place in can clean house. But not until we leave.
