Valve Flaw Found in TEPCO N-Plant's Water Cleanup Equipment

Tokyo, June 23 (Jiji Press)--Tokyo Electric Power Co. <9501> said Thursday that it has detected problems with a valve in pipes for cesium-absorbing equipment, part of a system to clean radiation-contaminated water at its stricken Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power station in northeastern Japan.

The announcement came after TEPCO found that the equipment was unable to absorb as much cesium as assumed.

Following a check of all valves in the pipes through which contaminated water passes, TEPCO resumed test operations of the equipment early Thursday morning. The trial involves the treatment of 50 tons of contaminated water per hour.

Valve indicating the opposite of what it really is. That’ll usually cause puzzlement in the final results.

The Japanese also drive on the opposite side of the road. Curious!

What about the plant in Nebraska? Anyone know what is going on with it?

nothing. there is nothing wrong at the Nebraska plant. It is not currently operating, it’s cooling is normal, it isn’t flooded, and nothing is happening.

Well, the no-fly zone over it seemed weird. Glad it’s all okay, though.

There are no-fly zones up and down the flooded river; I presume to keep sight-seers away from critical infrastructure.

Can we assume this faulty valve had nothing to do with the quake or tsunami but it’s been faulty since perhaps the day it was installed? No amount of explainations or nothing to see here will fly now what with everything else they’ve failed at.

...I presume to keep sight-seers away from critical infrastructure.

And probably to prevent a terrorist from dive bombing his plane into a wall of sand bags. There is also a second nuclear plant on the Missouri river in Nebraska. It is operational.

Cooper Nuclear Station

They are getting ready to shut the plant down due to flooding. It is currently in the lowest alert state.

“nothing. there is nothing wrong at the Nebraska plant. It is not currently operating, it’s cooling is normal, it isn’t flooded, and nothing is happening.”

It sounds like they will probably lose some outside infrastructure very soon next to the river.
It will probably make headlines when it happens.

They have buildings that contain things for electrical distribution and other things. But the reactor itself won't be affected. They have multiple backup systems (up high and dry) to keep cooling water going.
The headline writers probably won't notice the difference however!
The NRC head person is going to be there on Monday

Do you know anything about Cooper ? It is the second nuclear plant in Nebraska on the Missouri. Supposedly the water got to within 18 inches of the level to shutdown the reactor. Then subsided a little, but there is now a news flash that a levee is about to break near Brownville.

No I don’t have any info on that one. I was curious where the news about it maybe having to shutdown came from?

Posted links to this thread from yesterday. Was late getting to that thread.

Russia’s Federal Atomic Energy Agency: US orders news blackout over crippled Nebraska Nuclear Plant

Please note - Have no opinion on that Russian story. Just posting the Cooper data. And one of the links I posted was from a progressive news site (opednews). Just found the story on a google search.

Well the Russian story is garbage.

But we probably will see a story soon on a loss of some non reactor infrastructure at the shutdown plant.
They are fighting a heck of a battle to save some expensive equipment, but the water is too much.

Yeah the flooding is real bad. Apparently large areas of Canada were nailed in the flooding that is hitting Minot North Dakota. That is not the Missouri River. Drove over highway 90 through the heart of the Bayou Country during the height of the lower Mississippi flooding when they opened the flood gates. Amazing to see a small entire town functioning behind a levee that was close to over topping. Another 5 feet would have been catastrophic down there.

UPDATE: The Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is making a two day stop in Nebraska. NRC Chairman Gregory Jaczko will be in the state Sunday and Monday. According to a statement from the NRC Jaczko will “observe Missouri River flooding and the flooding preparation” at Nebraska’s two nuclear power plants. The statement goes on to note that “an NRC inspection at Fort Calhoun two years ago indicated deficiencies in the flood preparation area, which the licensee has now remedied.” Jaczko is scheduled to tour the Cooper plant on Sunday and Fort Calhoun on Monday, meeting with NRC inspectors at both plants along with plant officials. He is also scheduled to meet with reporters Monday afternoon in Omaha.
