A bipartisan team of Reps. Barney Frank, D-Mass., and Ron Paul, R-Texas, will introduce federal legislation that would permit states to legalize, regulate, tax and control marijuana without federal interference.
The legislation will be unveiled Thursday by Frank, an outspoken liberal Democrat, and the libertarian Paul, who is running for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.
The bill would limit the U.S. government role in marijuana enforcement to interdiction of cross-border or inter-state smuggling. Citizens would be able to legally grow, use or sell cannabis in states which have legalized the forbidden weed.
The legislation is the first bill to be introduced in Congress that would end federal marijuana prohibition.
In a preview of the legislation, the Marijuana Policy Project noted that last week marked the 40th Anniversary of when President Nixon declared that the federal government was at war with marijuana and other drugs.
Nixon had rejected recommendations by a presidential panel that the country move toward decriminalization and an education and treatment-based drug policy.

What is it that’s a “horrible idea”: legalizing pot, or leaving the decision about it up to the States? Which one is the article about?
It’s very strange that you use almost identical wording that another FReeper did. You do know that it’s a banning offense to have more than one account don’t you?
Thank you. I guess I have a new function in my Firefox browser. I merely copied that link into my clipboard and the browser automatically opened it. That’s a little more than I want it to do. lol
Did you realize there’s more to “debate” than spamming a paste buffer all over a thread?
The case comes down to the claim that a locally cultivated product that is used domestically rather than sold on the open market is not subject to federal regulation. Given the CSA's findings and the undisputed magnitude of the commercial market for marijuana, Wickard and its progeny foreclose that claim.
Ah, now I think I know what case Wickard is. A farmer was growing wheat for use as feed on his own farm and the Feds decided he needed to pay taxes on it. Or something close to that.
Sorry, but I do NOT buy it. I have been to countries where it is legal and other than normal lifestyle problems of those countries, their existence is not worsened because of marijuana.
I have used marijuana and it didn’t lead me to being a drug head! It is no worse than regular cigarettes! We don’t need government to keep us safe from ourselves! And you have no right to “smoke-free air “ unless you are in a bubble!
Follow the law? Maybe you should move to Europe where eveybody obeys the state without question. As Martin Luther King, Thoreau, that smuggler John Hancock, and Tom Paine pointed out inn America stupid laws are made to broken.
Many moons ago has only been here a very short time and juding by their posts they are not very conservative. It seems they have it in their heads that it is horrible and have that “it’s for the children” thing going that is not a conservative way of thinking. It was decriminalized in Ohio in the early 1970’s I do not notice it doing any of the things this person says it does.Someone seems to be very worried about what everyone else is doing instead of worrying about the constitution....nanny stater I guess?
Guess we just started younger? I know it’s been everyday since 18 except for times when I was ill or otherwise not interested but I started much younger than that.Carried a 4.0 average most of high school doing it so those who think it impairs thinking perhaps it doesn’t work the exact way the government says it does in everyone?
Sorry that the subject came up then. I always heard that as guys got older....it doesn’t seem to be working like that here and there are no little blue pills here.
I have to correct myself when I read this post the first time I saw 20 years now that I re read it you do have me beat.I’ve only got 34 years of daily and several more years of whenever I could get it.
Hookers and then what?
You are 56 and brag on FR about smoking marijuana for 40 years?!
I wonder how much jail time that would have been for breaking the law. What a disgrace.
No wonder you churn out as many pro marijuana posts, as you do in the cop hating threads.
Seek help.
They say the male sex drive peaks at 18. I'd agree with that. Mine has diminished. If we set a scale of 100 and my drive at 18 is 100 and my drive pre-puberty is 0 then I'm coasting downhill at about 97 now at age 56. No pills, no herbal formulas or enhancements of any kind.
None. For the last 30+ years possession of an ounce or less has been a misdemeanor $100 fine. And I'm not bragging I am telling my experience for the info it imparts.
What a disgrace.
Considering the things you say on this forum that is meaningless. I couldn't care less what you think of me.
As usual you are a liar. I don't post on marijuana threads very often at all. Your characterization of me as a cop hater is garbage too. Only you would think the murder of a Marine by incompetent cops is a good thing.
I suppose it is not to be expected from a person who brags about smoking marijuana for 40 years - but the investigation totally cleared the police of an wrong doing.
How about addressing the subject of the thread? Do you even know what it is? You don’t have a clue do you?
