Bachmann has many skeletons in her closet that will expose her as just another corrupt politician. Many on free republic are wearing blinders because Bachmann says all the right things and says them well. The media is suddenly playing it easy on her because they hope she ends up on the national ticket and they will destroy her later and if you thought Palin had it rough , Bachmann has some real good stuff for the media to use. Just wait until people see some of the interviews of these “23” foster kids.... free babysitting and house keeping plus 1.2 million in state money to the Bachmann’s. Pardons for fat cat donors. Farm subsidies for her family. Using tax funded congressional office money for political events. Media just sitting on this for later.

Hey, whaddaya know? Another hit piece on Michele Bachmann claiming she is nothing more than a stalking horse for Mitt Romney, set out to fulfill the establishment’s wishes of destroying Sarah Palin.

As Mark Levin would say, “Where does that exist, other than in your head”.

No matter how many times the courts try to tell us Separation of Church and State is in the Constitution, it doesn’t make it true. And no matter how many times people here try to say Bachmann is an Establishment Stalking Horse does it make it true either.

Can Michele Bachmann have a similar impact on the 2012 race? While that certainly appears to be her intent, no serious observer actually believes that she can defeat Romney or any other Establishment candidate any more than Phil Crane could have done in 1980.

Ahem. Bachmann 24%, Cain 15%, Romney 15% in the last Zogby poll. I'm a Cain supporter, but to deny that Bachmann could win the nomination is foolish.

It’s not clear to me whether or not Bachmann is being a bad girl - whether she’s knowingly acting to head off Palin in order to help Romney and indirectly herself by getting the favor returned, whether she’s honorably putting herself out there as a candidate for the Presidency, whether she’s failing to show her appreciation for Palin’s help in her last campaign.

Bachmann should know she doesn’t stand a chance head-to-head against Palin. That being the case, it would be logical for her to join a pack of Palin detractors.

But I’m glad to see a bunch of good people competing for the Republican nomination. It increases the odds of ending up with the best one to defeat Obama.

Much as I like Palin, if it becomes obvious that she can’t defeat Obama, we must not nominate her.

And what was Reagan's reaction to this? Publicly, he was his sunny optimistic self, laughing off the age issue and declining to attack Crane. But privately? As Craig Shirley recounts (at page 33) in his epic story of the 1980 Campaign, "Rendezvous with Destiny", Reagan was hopping mad about Phil Crane's betrayal :

Shirley also pointed out later in the book that all of Reagan's primary opponents were given speaking slots at the convention EXCEPT for his most conservative opponent, Phil Crane. Reagan was in no mood to forgive Phil Crane in Detroit.

Good post.

Nail, meet Hammer.

This is an exquisite explanation of exactly what is happening. MB is a VERY ambitious womn with no loyalty except to herself. This is calculated and cold and that is how I, and many others, see it. It isn’t about the country. It’s about her. She has made it thus.
I am not going to argue with bachmann supporters over this either. MB will out herself. Sometimes obvious has to be stark enough to draw blood when you have been bamboozled. It will be. And it’s sad because it didn’t need to be this way.

I voted for Phil Crane in the 1980 Republican primary (my first ever vote was for Reagan in the 1976 primary).

I don't know if Crane could have won the election, but I believed that he was more conservative than Reagan.

I used to think the GOP establishment enlisted Bachmann to dilute the conservative votes in the primary (i.e. stalking horse theory), in exchange to promise Bachmann the second place on the ticket. Now, I think Bachmann is purely being used.

IF Bachmann is successful and Romney got the nod, I believe Romney / GOP establishment is going to pick either Rubio or another Southerner (or TX/Southwest) but more to Romney’s right as his running mate.

Bachmann will have learned a hard lesson. Maybe she’ll be a secretary of something minor. But the downward trend of the country will continue and the public will be justified to blame the final descend all on the Republicans.

This article is downright silly. Not the world, the U.S., or even the Republican party revolves around Sarah Palin. If she decides to run, she will be a strong candidate but with her own set of strengths and weaknesses. Right now, good conservatives, like Bachman and Cain, have decided to take the field. To argue that this has something to do with Romney or Palin is to denigrate their commitment to this Country.

The Palin cultists do as much harm to Palin as do the Romneybots. If Palin decides to run, conservatives will take a good hard look at supporting her. If she waits too long, commitments to established candidates could be hard to break. Personally, I hope she runs but what will be the eventual outcome of this decision is unknown to Palin, her supporters and to her opposition. Meanwhile, conspiracy theories do little to shed light on the quality of our candidates.

I originally thought a Palin/Bachmann ticket would be great. Your analysis, however, is spot on!

For me, the giveaway was when Chris Mathews suddenly proclaimed Bachmann to be his "hero." My preferred ticket now would be Palin/West.

However, I have total trust in Sarah - to paraphrase an old Henry Fonda line, whoever suits her will just tickle me plumb to death!
