Weren’t the women of the Western world already called on to have fewer children, and then, right after, told that immigration from the non-Western world was absolutely necessary for the economy because they’d had too few children?
Correct! Without immigration to Germany, in about 20 years there will be one retiree for two workers. Assuming a retiree receives 50% of his or her salary each worker would pay 25% of his or her salary for that one retiree. Lots of assumptions here: no inflation and everyone is earning the same income) But the point is, this is the result of low birth rates-at least for some period of time-lots of retirees and few workers. China may see this problem in about 20 years. People who study economic development wonder if China will get rich before it gets old.
