“If you look at it purely from a political standpoint, Republicans in Texas and throughout the nation are going to get their clocks cleaned eventually if they don’t reach an agreement on immigration,” said former White House Communications Director Dan Bartlett.

That problem started with a certain GHWB who deliberately refused to enforce immigration laws and the border starting in 1989 after the amnesty of 1986, which was to be followed by strict enforcement. Then we had eight years of Clinton and eight years of W, who both continued the pandering, non-enforcement policies.

Nothing points out dangers of Texas and border state politicians more than the two Bush presidencies and the policies advocated by others such as McCain and Kyl and Rick Perry.

The border states basically transferred their problems to the entire nation through their politicians failings.

Bush is a good man, much better than Gore, much better than Kerry - but not much of a conservative either.

While I have a lot of criticisms of Bush, history may be kinder to him than many think. His leadership and steady hand after 9-11 will not be forgotten. Also, Iraq turned into an excellent terrorist killing ground at a time a lot of jihadi’s wanted to find some place to fight America, and the nation building I freely admit to having opposed might turn out better than a lot of people (including myself) expected.

Bush’s biggest flaw, aside from not being a reliable conservative on all too many issues, was his inability to communicate effectively and move public opinion.

Yessiree by golly, you’ve been vindimacated.

It’s sure is a shame we didn’t have Gore or Kerry, heck, we could have even lucked out and had John Edwards, maybe even Screamer Dean.

We be so much better now that we got us our Obama...... You watch, I be vindimacated someday too.

“united in their disdain”

I think disdain is a bit too strong. I voted for him twice, and the other alternatives were worse. But I was never on board with his “new tone” garbage and wasn’t happy with his refusal to challenge the Dems.

He was no conservative, but he definitely earned respect as CINC. So no disdain, just respect mixed with disappointment over lost opportunities.

I think the MSM should be more worried about their Nutroot friends than the GOP or the Tea Party.

I think the real truth is somewhere in the middle, between these extremes. Bush had his strengths, but he also had his faults—big spending, alien amnesty, leaving lousy leftists in charge of important parts of his administration.

But Bush was a decent guy, a real gentleman, who—as I said—also had his strengths.

As for this article, it’s just another twist on “blame Bush.” They can’t very well attack Bush for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, since Obama is still fighting those, and has even started a couple more. So they blame the economic crisis on Bush and his big-spending ways.

That started when Paulson—one of those traitors whom Bush never should have left in charge of the Treasury—came up with the Dems’ big October Surprise—a terrible financial crisis that was all Bush’s fault.

And in last week’s New Hampshire presidential debate, the Republican field even edged away from the Bush administration’s activist foreign policy, condemning the intervention in Libya and calling for an end to the war in Afghanistan

Nonsense. Libya is not in the same ball park. Conservatives were all for the "activist" policy of going into both Iraq and Afganistan.

And even W. would likely be looking to diminish our presence in Afganistan now that Bin Laden is dead. And likely we would have made greater progress there by this time were he still Pres.

Bush is the Republican version of Jimmy Carter. Making Bush dissappear was a magic trick that needed to be performed. But if Rick Perry becomes the nominee, what’s the point?

In the real world hating Bush solves nothing. President Al Gore and President John Kerry are fortunately hypotheticals ...Hate Bush all you want but remember the alternatives.

Yet again the MSM gets it wrong in their zeal to damn all things Bush and all things Republican. Republicans aren’t “united in their distain” for Bush. Most Republicans I know have a mixed view of Bush, myself included. I think he was an abject failure on government expansion, entitlements, spending and amnesty. I think he did an admirable job on war issues and Supreme Court picks. Bush was a mixed bag, nothing more but nothing less.

Let's see how “dumb” Bush really was?

He “stole” an election and then got reelected 4 years later.

If Politico thinks this will distract from Obama’s failures then they got another thing coming.

The red flag was the wink wink to the cultural marxists, when he sold them on compassionate conservatism.

However, I would take that globalist elitist over the current usurper any day.

I think the GOP is turning away from some of President Bush’s more liberal policies (Medicare, No Child Left Behind, excessive spending). And that’s a good thing.

But there’s quite a gulf between disliking Medicare and disliking George Bush. There’s a gulf between acknowledging his mistakes and refusing to acknowledge his accomplishments.

George W. Bush did many good things as president. His stand on social issues was good. His Supreme Court justices are excellent. His anti-terrorism campaign was so manifestly successful even Obama is too afraid to mess with his policies. Iraq has been stable and quiet for a long time; it may yet be Bush’s most brilliant accomplishment (but not Obama’s!).

And President Bush is a man of character. Believing that our most serious deficit is one of character, I don’t dismiss that.

If the Republican Party is turning against No Child Left Behind, I’m all for it. If they outright abolished the Department of Education, I’d cheer them all the way. If they are going back to the “realist” foreign policy of men like Jim Baker - who, back in the dark days of 2006, thought the solution to Iraq was negotiating with Iran - I oppose it.

Because some of Bush’s policies were right and need to be continued. Some were wrong and need to be rejected. But he is a good man, and there’s no need to disdain him.
