I think the writer is confusing Mennonites with Amish. I know several mennonites and they are very techno-literate.

I’m thinking of old order Mennonites, who are quite collective and kibbutz type in their community. There are more modern Mennonites who are integrated into society and use technology. I suspect the father was old order Mennonite.
