From my understand, it mixes loud, bassy electronic music with fairly baggy pants (actually not jeans), and a loooooot of glow sticks. It’s almost its own dance style.

Both the music and all the glow doodads are chosen to enhance the effects of the drug that defines the rave scene, X or ecstasy. Infant pacifiers are or were an odd but frequently seen accessory, too. Not just a weird affectation, the drug causes users to grit their teeth and the pacifier gives them something to chew upon.

First rave I ever heard of in the US was in Houston, at least two decades ago. Baggy pants are more hiphop. Rave scene would be skinny jeans if there is any sort of set style of pants. It’s really more of a free-for-all in that sense and in more ways than that.

You’d have to have been there to understand it. I was, don’t participate in that sort of thing anymore since returning to God and becoming Christian. Last rave I attended was an outdoor multi-day affair over Labor Day 1999 in the Bay Area.
