Funny story. Many years ago, I was on the U.S.S. Tripoli. Aboard ship as you can imagine there are many different groups of people. Fillipinos speaking Tagalog, Dominicans/Puerto Ricans/others speaking Spainish. One day the captain gets on speaker and is passing information. This is a fairly common occurrence to hear the captain speak from time to time. This is one time that I will never forget. At the end of the word he was passing, he announces words to the effect that this is a United States Naval ship and the official language on here is English. No other languages are to be spoken.

I never had a problem with others speaking their native tongue to fellow natives. After all, they can probably best communicate their thoughts and ideas in their native tongue. However, in a public forum such as the Senate hearing or when speaking to someone to talk about others while right in front of them is highly insulting. And the government should provide all of their documentation/etc in English only.

I remember Tripoli well. After decommissioning, she spent time at Mare Island, being worked over for some Army project. Got to wander around her a couple of times. Brought back a LOT of memories, for sure!
