You are absolutely correct. One interesting feature being he does not seem to have any insight into his character flaws.

Gingrich is the guy who gave Bill Clinton the most trouble. The Left has never forgotten that. They will work tirelessly to bring him down.

Not only he accomplished his Contract With America - had House vote on all 10 items in the Contract and passed 6 of them into law, including welfare reform, and set the budget "compromise" that eventually led to the short-lived budget surplus (for which Clinton with the media's help took credit), but when the threatened "old guard" in the Senate combined with the jealous and inexperienced "young turks" in the House to question his leadership, he had the courage (rare in politicians of either party) to step aside, leave Congress and get his personal life together (finalize divorce and remarry) and put his political principles into practice in private life.

Seems that he has (quietly) done more for conservative causes since he left Congress than the Congress under the "compassionate conservative" - his successor Dennis Hastert and President Bush - even when they had overwhelming legislative majority, which he didn't have.
