Would 'Texas fatigue' hurt a Rick Perry presidential bid?

NEW YORK — When George W. Bush left office, countless pundits proclaimed — if not in so many words — that it would be a chilly July in Dallas before Americans sent another Texan to the White House.

And sure enough, that argument is prominent in discussion of Gov. Rick Perry's potential presidential bid.

But with Republicans still searching for a front-runner, and Perry flirting with a run, Texas fatigue may prove less enduring than predicted.

"Why not? Listen, anything's better than Obama," said Philip Ragusa, the Republican chairman in Queens, just across the river from Manhattan, where Perry headlined a GOP dinner Tuesday.

After chatting with the governor, Ragusa — his New York accent as thick as Perry's West Texas drawl — came away impressed.

"It doesn't matter where a person comes from, and this person seems to have a stellar record," he said.

A NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey released Wednesday showed Perry in fourth place among registered Republican voters nationwide — ahead of several candidates who have actually joined the race.

Mitt Romney, making his second run for president, led the pack at 30 percent, with Sarah Palin — the party's last vice presidential nominee—at 14 percent. Pizza executive Herman Cain nudged past Perry with 12 percent, though he has already been in two televised presidential debates.

Perry drew 8 percent, a tick ahead of Rep. Ron Paul, a fellow Texan who entered this race, his third, with a nationwide following.

That suggests Texas fatigue may not be a huge issue in the GOP nominating contest. Even though some Republicans remain sour on Bush, for them, Texas remains a place where the economy has done well because conservatism is triumphant.

CA sent a bipartisan delegation a few months ago to figure out why CA businesses are relocating to TX en masse. I can tell you this legislature and the Lt. Gov didn't learn a thing. I saw the public portion of the meeting, Perry had a clear message about regulation reductions and streamlining, tort reforms, lower taxes and stability. They keep trying to find new ways to tax including empowering counties to add new layers of taxation in CA.

That's funny. The Socialists went to a "Fix Your Economy Lecture" where the message was "More Capitalism, Less Socialism" and they came away thinking up more schemes to increase socialism.

Too bad there is no news media in America. The whole country would be laughing at that one.

....My apprehension with Perry is that the GOP elite might force him to add JBush as his VP [shades of Reagan and GHW Bush]. That could sink Perry in the general election. The Bush name still causes a bad taste.

I don't think that scenario is in the cards, at all -- (Perry picking a Bush to be on the ticket with him -- LOL)

IF Perry won the R nomination (a very big IF at this point), I think his VP choice short-list would look something like this:

I was the same way about McCain. But when it came down to what we were about to endure under Obama, I voted. I had to tie a vomit bag to my face the whole time, but the alternative was too sickening to ponder.

Imagine, if you will, another Obama term. The one he will use to install his real agenda. His first term was greatly subdued and merely a Trojan Horse. He may even dissolve Presidential Term Limits after he declares some kind of dire emergency that warrants Executive Privilege and he declares himself President for life. I know it sounds crazy, but nobody ever thought that we would have over 90 Czars on his staff either. And Obama sidetracked Congress to fund them by his own Dictatorial authority. We cannot afford to take the chance FRiend.

I could care less where a leader comes from so long as he’s a natural born citizen. Perry being from Texas would not in the least keep me from voting for him. And it wouldn’t prevent any kind of loyal American from doing so.

Using one’s state against a candidate strikes me as anti-American...anti-UNITED States..

If it were me making that list, I would exclude Palin. She is not at all about to accept another VP debacle. That failed endeavor has greatly hurt her chances this time around.

I believe that the reason she moved to Arizona, is because she plans of running for the vacant Senate seat coming up in ‘12. Not many here think that is possible, but Palin has recently promoted Perry and previously endorsed Bachmann. In that respect, I think she is setting up a scenario that will help her turn down a reason for running for President.

Doing so would give her a solid and stable record and repair her failed Governorship's reputation. It would also hone her political skills for a run in 2016, when the field will be wide open again and not hindered by a corrupt incumbent President.

I think most of us here totally agree with you. That is why we need an alternative. Perry has been governor of a prosperous state for 10 years now. He can run on job creation, the influx of businesses to Texas, the second amendment, his Christian faith and come up a winner. If he doesn't uphold conservative values once he's in office we vote him out in four. It's better than 4 more of obama. Texas is still standing and prospering after 10 years of Perry. Can't say the same about the rest of the country.

I’m not for Perry, but his toying with a Presidential run (or something) has turned him more conservative lately and that’s a good thing.

I do too. As Rush said yesterday, the Bush years were the good old days.

I think it is now considered ‘cute’ on this forum to bash former President George W. Bush, who was a good man and one thousand times better than the current occupant of the office.

Bush made a few decisions that didn’t suit people here, but he was always a patriot and he did what he believed to be right. I crossed Cain off my list for Bush bashing.

We have people to do that ... they’re called democrats. Obama spent his first 2 1/2 years blaming Bush and some people here seem to believe him. It irritates me no end.

I agree with you that Palin would most likely not accept a VP offer.

But just because she ends up not accepting doesn’t mean that she doesn’t start out on Perry’s short list. I think she would be on the list, and if offered, she’d say no and he’d have to move to the next name on the list.

But I agree, she will probably say no. Which saddens me.

I think a Perry/Palin ticket would be a great one.

And it would so explode the liberal heads because Perry would probably win no matter who his running mate is (short of Larry Craig) and then there would Palin be, as VP, despite all their YEARS OF BOMB THROWING AGAINST HER!

But, like you say, it’s probably not going to happen.

Henninger has an article in the WSJ, speculating on the question of Texas fatigue due to other Texas presidents. I skipped it at first, expecting it to be negative, but I was surprised. The article is actually positive regarding the possibility of a Perry candidacy. Henninger says that it would enliven the Republican primary.
