Senate Votes to Retain Ethanol Subsidies

(CNSNews.com) - The U.S. Senate on Tuesday rejected a Republican attempt to repeal ethanol subsidies.

The motion to cut off debate on Sen. Tom Coburn's ethanol amendment was defeated by a vote of 40-59. Thirty-four of the Senate's 47 Republicans favored ending the ethanol tax credit and tariff.

“The Senate’s refusal to save taxpayers $3 billion by ending an ethanol subsidy the beneficiaries themselves don’t want highlights the incompetence and dysfunction of this body," Coburn (R-Okla.) said. "Instead of protecting taxpayers by reducing our deficit and lowering food prices, many senators chose to protect the desire of Senate leaders to avoid tough issues."

Sometimes Coburn seems like the only rational being in the Senate.

Further light on the subject this morning from my own Senator who voted Nay. That would be John Thune. Senator Johnson also voted Nay.

Apparently the industry had received a promise from Senators that the subsidy would be available until the end of the year. The majority felt it would not be fair to “pull the rug out from under the industry” just six months after extending the credit. He agrees that it will probably go after the end of the year.

That said, how long is it going to take before the seriousness of our financial situation sinks in or sinks us.

The Senate is nothing but a pretentious, formal gathering of common criminals that can’t be properly prosecuted and jailed.

my oh my ... this is not good news (as everyone here knows). if it cannot survive, on its own, then there is nothing which will make a subsidy save money for deficit spending reduction. [and it is certain someone(s) are taking notes] therefore spending reductions are folly till more Conservatives are elected, that is, if Conservatives are Conservative and do the necessary spending reductions. (shaking head left to right) Action -—> reaction thoughts this A.M.

Why is the government ethanol program any different from any other government program that manipulates the economy and directs our behavior? Why not cut all such programs?

Someone help me here, but can’t the House refuse to fund the ethanol subsidy?

Besides that, even if the subsidy is ended, the feds mandate the crap in our gas, so we would still be paying for it at the pump.

ONLY "Thirty-four of the Senate's 47 Republicans favored ending the ethanol tax credit and tariff."

Clearly displaying once again why the monster government keeps growing and sucking our lifeblood no matter which branch of THE BIG GOVERNMENT party wins elections.

Kind of off subject but still about ethanol. Does anybody find that since ethanol has been added to gas you are filling up more?

The only case I can make for this fuel is as a supplement via this brilliant idea from a bunch of MIT wonks @ Ethanol Boosting Technologies...

http://www.ethanolboost.com/

They direct inject Ethanol @ peak loads to the tune of 5% and rase effective octanes to 150-180 range and can make a gas 3.5L V6 have the HP and Torque of a Mid Sized Diesel, i.e. in the 550 hp /550 ft lbs of Torque range...

Ford did it with "Project Bobcat" ( Google it ) but they may have dropped it do to cost or it has become an internal "Black Program"....

* But how many of these loons in Senate could understand the technology?
* Would they make a case for it and pick it which maybe unconsitutional and make it a national priority and run with it?
* How many engine heads here or the average Joe can or can't get their arms around the concept?

The bottom line it is a great idea, if we were doing Ethanol via Sugar Cane or Beets maybe, but Corn? Heck no, Corn is the wrong feed stock period... But even with all this, I can't even sell this concept...

sorry, I have no power, vote in Congress, or means to direct our Congressional reps except by individual vote and individual written letters, emails, etc. Since the subsidy lives on and was not ended there is little to no prayer anything will be done, in this Congress, to end any program, or wasteful spending....mho

Sorta like paying an allowance to your kid when you lost your job and no money is coming in.

all you are doing is teaching him bad habits, a lack of self-reliance, not even mentioning that you are in a hole so deep you cannot escape.

Why do you do it? cause it makes you feel better inside(the normal liberal feel-good syndrome)

Ethanol itself is very much like the U.S. Senate: wasteful and destructive.
