Last year my daughter was in first grade, she memorized the preamble to the Declaration of Independence.

Excellent! I remember memorizing long poems, including Longfellow's "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" and "Oh Captain My Captain".

And I went to a public school. Back then our teacher lead us in a short prayer at the start of the day, right after the Pledge of Allegiance. Every teacher did that.

The times have changed, and obviously not for the better.

Excellent! My daughter goes to a private school. Every morning they recite three prayers, one in English, one in French, one in Spanish (they are conversant in French and Spanish by the time they graduate 8th grade). They also recite the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States.

Kids are capable of so much more than the public schools offer.
