TACOMA Briana Waters, the California violin teacher who was facing retrial for her role in the 2001 arson at the University of Washington's Center for Urban Horticulture, pleaded guilty Tuesday to several charges related to the attack.
Waters, 35, pleaded guilty to four counts, including arson, conspiracy to use a destructive device, possessing a destructive device and use of a destructive device. The last count carries a penalty of up to 30 years to life. She also agreed to pay the UW and the state nearly $7 million in restitution.
Waters had maintained her innocence even after a federal jury convicted her of two counts of arson following her 2008 trial. She was serving a six-year sentence at Danbury Federal Correctional Facility in Connecticut when the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, citing judicial misconduct, overturned her conviction and ordered a new trial.
Waters was released from prison last year pending the new trial, which was set to begin next month.
During Tuesday's plea hearing, Waters admitted her testimony during her 2008 trial had been false. She said she was among a group of people who planted firebombs in the Center for Urban Horticulture office of UW professor Toby Bradshaw.
She is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 23.
Waters is one of five activists alleged to have participated in the UW arson, which prosecutors say caused more than $6 million in damage while destroying rare plants, books and years of research. Prosecutors had said Waters helped procure a car and acted as a lookout.

Briana plea bargained for her retrial. I’d guess with her agreeing to the $7 million restitution she’ll do little if any more time in prison.
nut case. too bad for the child
the last count she pleaded guilty to carries up to 30 years to life. when she was convicted earlier her sentence was set at 6 years. Something is missing here

Couldn’t agree more. This Briana and a lot of the other members of “The Family” were from well to do families but were enviro nut cases.
Hopefully her daughter doesn’t follow in her footsteps.
I guess she won’t be fiddling around for a while.
I believe the plea bargain has to contain little or no more prison time.
she’ll never pay a dime. Did you read the last sentence of the article? Waters is considered a hero for tree sitting to prevent logging of 28K acres of forest. Great, America’s desparate for heros; the media gives us an arsonist and an islamist!
Yep, there was a lot said about him on previous threads, he’s definitely a flake and I should have included a /sarc after my post. :)
The greenest greens you’ve ever seen are in Seattle....
Yep, I read it and I’m sure it’ll be paid. Maybe not from her pocket though I believe she can afford it.
Didn’t Rachel “pancake” Corrie attend Evergreen as well?
She’s got the backing of enviro-nazis, anarchists and general nut cases in the environmental movement.
Yes, they both did. Evergreen is probably one of if not the most leftist colleges in the country.
Lolz!
using a destructive device during a crime of violence carries a federal penalty of up to 30 years to life.
So she be in for awhile ?
No Nero jokes?
like Kathleen Soliah...the law wasn't meant for them....
