Slaves of New York (State is dead last in liberties)

Unshackle New York!

New York's notoriously high taxes and public spending, combined with restrictive "nanny" policies, make it the "least free" state in the country, a new study has found.

The Empire State ranked 50th in George Mason University's biannual "Freedom in the States" rankings.

"New York has by far the highest taxes in the country," the study reads, citing steep levies on property, income and corporations compared to other states.

The high taxes, in turn, fuel massive spending, according to the analysis by George Mason's Mercatus Center, a libertarian think tank.

"Spending on public welfare, hospitals, electric power, transit, employee retirement . . . are well above national norms," concludes the report, which covers the 2007-through-2009 period.

Ranking worst in the categories of economic freedom and fiscal policy, New York also landed near the bottom for the categories of personal freedom (48th) and regulatory policy (40th).

The study cites New York's restrictive gun-control and anti-smoking laws and sky-high cigarette taxes and the Big Apple's ban on trans fats.

*

Joining New York near the bottom of the list are Massachusetts, Hawaii, California, and New Jersey.

The top five "freedom" states are New Hampshire, whose motto is fittingly "Live Free or Die," South Carolina, Indiana, Idaho and Missouri.

NY’s (NYC not included)gun laws are better than MA, Il, Wi, HI, California and NJ.

that is not saying much but you CAN get a concealed carry permit in NY...arguably it is not the easiest to get...NY might be preparing to get worse...but the State Senate seems to be holding off things like CA’s microstamping law.
the worse thing currently in the law is no new magazines over 10 rounds...though old high cap mags are grandfathered in....

It has not ever been so. We have voted it on ourselves in NY (and continue to do so).

Haven’t New Yorkers heard of U-Haul?

“...you CAN get a concealed carry permit in NY...arguably it is not the easiest to get..”

6 weeks in our upstate county. Full CCW for both Mrs. panax and we shoot anytime we want to on our 7 acres.

Property + School taxes = $900 @ year combined.

Very low crime rate. An occasional break-in to summer cabins, some pot growing. Mostly minor stuff overall.

Most people leave their houses unlocked and keys in the car in case someone wants to use it. We lock, however.

I guess it depends on where you live in NY state.

The Mercatus study this comes from has to be one of the most moronic studies to come out in a while. It puts Alaska at #44 with New Hampshire at #1 in freedom.

Total joke.

I’m not saying New York is a bastion of freedom, but the study is just wrong.

The data they had on Texas is even wrong.

Hmmm, another byproduct of socialist control, and what they have done to states like CA, IL, NJ and NY, they want to do to the rest of the nation.

But, that’s not what’s frightening - leftists have always promoted the socialist agenda.

What’s frightening is that upwards of 50% of the country support them.

Average citizens want to ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK. And they have been leave in droves for many years. While the rich Wall Streeters are getting less for their Hampton real estate, New York garbage men dream of relocating to Myrtle Beach. They leaave the garbage behind.

How can that be? I have talked with many ex-New Yorkers who fled the state precisely because their property tax, even in small upstate communities, typically ran $8K, $9K, $10K+ a year?

This study must be flawed. How can they list Indiana near the top when the cops can “legally” bust in your door anytime they want. So much for the freedom of the Fourth.

New Jersey has

(1) Cheap gas. Much cheaper than the states that neighbor it. Money is freedom (in many ways). Taxation is oppression (beyond a point).

(2) People who pump gas for you. Freeing you to do other things.

(3) Very good highway engineering, and well maintained roads. This is due to good groups of civil engineers and the three level structure of road maintenance — local, county and state. Travel is freedom, and poor roads like a barrier to that freedom.

THIS Ex-NYer did, and put NY in my rear-view mirror. Lived in 2 of the 3 top states since leaving (NC & FL), and never regretted leaving...

New York State is vast.I mean BIG and we have 62 counties. Each decides it’s tax code. Each school system decides it’s taxes etc etc etc. Each decides its gun laws (except NYC)

My state, county, school taxes come to about 6k a year. My health insurance is easily double that.

Indiana one of the top “free” states?? After what their Supreme Court just ruled?? It doesn’t matter anyway as long as the fed continues to have it’s way with the states.

>>”How can that be?”<<

I have no idea, but it is 100% true. We have 7 acres covered in Sugar Maples, Spruce and Ash trees, bordered on 3 sides by 1700+ acres of state land, a year-round creek, house and 3 out-buildings and another leveled off building site.

I have talked to people in surrounding counties that do have very high property taxes. However, our taxes have doubled in the past 22 years. They were less than $500 total when we first bought the place back in 1989. Damn taxes! LOL

This is why I always defend NY (upstate) when I read all the negative posts from those who only read the papers about how terrible NY is to live in. Let them believe what they read, as long as they stay the heck away from my upstate paradise. Everything we have is paid for and we pay less taxes per year than most pay per month. Why would we want to leave....except for the cold and long winters?

Thanks for defending us. I also get tired of all the NY bashing going on here on FR. Most are too ignorant to understand that NY is more than NY City.

Why do we live here? Why do we stay? Why do we fight on despite being outnumbered by the downstate liberal strongholds?

Well, here is a little bit of why I love it here. Just a small taste...

Great photos! I have thousands like them. Southern Adirondacks/Northern Catskills?

Maybe we shouldn’t be bragging so much about our state (NYC excluded)? Few people know that NYS is 63% forested (18.9 Million acres), flush with game and has thousands of beautiful waterfalls.

They don’t realize that we have Salmon/Steelhead runs twice a year. They don’t know about the great deer, bear, grouse & turkey hunting available to us right outside our back doors.

One thing that always puzzles me is if NY is loaded with liberals and we’re ‘taxed to death’, then why is our state always ranked in the top ten contributors to FRee Republic?

Thanks for posting the photos and the support.
