National Rifle Association President David Keene is predicting a Mitt Romney victory in the 2012 Republican presidential nominating process , and working to burnish the credentials of the liberal former Governor of Massachusetts.
Here's the problem:
As Governor, Mitt Romney banned guns.
From July, 2004:
Governor Mitt Romney has signed into law a permanent assault weapons ban that he says will make it harder for criminals to get their hands on these guns.
"Deadly assault weapons have no place in Massachusetts," Romney said, at a bill signing ceremony on July 1 with legislators, sportsmen's groups and gun safety advocates. "These guns are not made for recreation or self-defense. They are instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people."
Like the federal assault weapons ban, the state ban, put in place in 1998, was scheduled to expire in September. The new law ensures these deadly weapons, including AK-47s, UZIs and Mac-10 rifles, are permanently prohibited in Massachusetts no matter what happens on the federal level.

I'm thinking that perhaps NRA members, and anyone else who cares about the protection of our Right to Keep and Bear Arms, might want to ask Mr. Keene how much money he and/or the organizations he represents have received from Mr. Romney and his closest allies.
Because, the way I see it, such considerations are the only thing that can explain why the head of the nation's largest gun organization would be shilling for someone who banned exactly the sort of weapons that in 1775 the British went to Lexington and Concord to seize.

Just like the NAA(L)CP became race hustlers and the AARP age hustlers, the NRA has become gun hustlers.
All three organizations make things worse for their particular causes by endorsing politicians or laws detrimental to them.
The NAA(L)CP goes Democrat so that African Americans will always be trapped on the unproductive entitlement plantation of victim-hood and thus dependent on them to keep the hand outs coming.
The AARP went with Obamacare so that when it's policies put granny before the death panels she will go to them in desperation for “extra” insurance.
By purchasing Reid and now Romney the NRA expect even more “protection money” from members to keep them away from the 2nd Amendment.
Never let a crisis go to waste and if there are none make some—all three institutions have been totally subverted by the Left.

Apparently the NRA no longer supports conservative politicians. Because I’m not a gun owner (but fully support the Second Amendment) I can’t be sure but judging from it’s backing of Harry Reid and Mitt Romney, the NRA doesn’t appear to care much about the folks (gun owners) it purports to represent. If that is the case, why does the NRA even exist - and why do gun owners bother to pay good money ($35. annually) to join the NRA?

"NRA lost me when they endorsed Reid."
They must have never had you. They never endorsed Reid, ever. In the last election, they did make me mad because Reid had a B rating and Sharon Angle had an A rating and they decided not to endorse either of them. I still have my October Issue of America's First Freedom with the ratings/endorsements.
I'm guessing you're not a member of the NRA, never read who they endorsed/did not endorse last year and are speaking out of ignorance. Educate yourself before making false statements and bashing the NRA.

"but judging from its backing of Harry Reid and Mitt Romney"
Read my post 31 to Gator113 for the first assertion. As for the second one, the VP of the NRA talking about Mitt Romney does not automatically extend to the whole NRA. Don't cast aspersions on the NRA for one statemet by a VP. I'm not going to cast aspersions on FreeRepublic or think badly of them because a few freepers may be idiots, right? You should follow the same logic with the NRA.

Don't cast aspersions on the NRA for one statemet by a VP. He's not "a VP." He's the President.

You are right about his family, Romney has hundreds of millions, and has never bought a gun, and his family shuns military service and has, since they came to America in the 1840s to serve Joseph Smith.

"He's not "a VP." He's the President."
Sorry, he was just elected at the end of April/begnning of May at the convention. Schmeits used to be the President. Shoot me, I'm a little behind. The point still stands, support of Romney is not any official position of the NRA that I have ever read yet. When I see all of the NRA people lining up behind Mitt then I'll castigate them for this. Until then, I'll keep my powder dry and won't spout off over one statement by an NRA official.
