Old-time religion, today's politics [cultivating "sinister right-wing culture warriors"]

The sentiments expressed by John F. Kennedy in his famous 1960 speech on religion and politics are being swept away by Republican presidential contenders.

[snip]

"I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute;...... I believe in a president whose views on religion are his own private affair, neither imposed upon him by the nation, nor imposed by the nation upon him as a condition to holding that office."

If, as seems increasingly likely, Texas Gov. Rick Perry jumps into the current race for the Republican presidential nomination, Houston also will be the scene of a campaign event that demonstrates just how far we've descended from that day Kennedy spoke, and what the consequences of that descent are. Perry has summoned the country's governors to join him on Aug. 6 in a national day of prayer and fasting sponsored by a fundamentalist, evangelical Protestant ministry. Perry, who urges participants to bring a Bible, acknowledges that the event, which is called The Response, is an overtly Christian occasion, and on its website, he writes that America's hope "lies in heaven, and we will find it on our knees."

In a written statement, Perry argues: "Given the trials that beset our nation and world, from the global economic downturn to natural disasters, the lingering danger of terrorism and continued debasement of our culture, I believe it is time to convene the leaders from each of our United States in a day of prayer and fasting, like that described in the book of Joel."

When it comes to allies, Perry isn't a bit shy about cultivating some of the more sinister right-wing culture warriors.....

Perry is hardly the only GOP candidate to troll for votes in these murky waters....

The way I understand it, is only that the government cannot create any religion.

Correct.

U.S. Constitution - First Amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. You got me curious:

This word has a surprising origin — “sinister” is the Latin word for”left”. Throughout history, many people considered the left side to be evil or unlucky (in Latin, “sinister” also meant unlucky), and the right side to be good. Left-handedness itself was considered a malady, and until recently it was common for teachers to require left-handed children to use their right hands in an effort to “cure”them.Similarly, in English the word right — meaning right side — is the same as the word right — meaning correct or fitting, as in “right answer” and “legal right.” This is also true in many other languages;examples include French (droit), Spanish (derecho), and Russian(pravo).

So, just as we thought, the Left is Sinister!

a president whose views on religion are his own private affair

So said the godless libertine. We know about his "private affairs".

The main problem with sinister right wing culture warriors is that there are not nearly enough of them.

An old saying in politics: if you seek victory, you’re going to need fanatics. Lots of them.

No more reaching across the aisle unless it’s to grab someone’s throat.

Sinister - that means “left”. The sense of malevolence and danger associated with that word stem from the hidden left hand holding a dagger.

The right is the side of openness and fellowship.

That writer has things backwards.

The writer has an agenda: Reelect Obama.

Marxism/Communism/Socialism is a religion of destruction. They are constantly destroying the status quo, even when they become the status quo. Everything is done according to the elite leadership who are eternally suspicious of each other and, therefore, desirous of destroying each other. They are Evil incarnate.

Maybe we can start referring to the left wing as the “sinister wing” instead. There is no sense of the word which does not apply.
