In the two years that Gregory Jaczko has led the nation's independent nuclear agency, his actions to delay, hide and kill work on a disputed dump for high-level radioactive waste have been called "bizarre," `'unorthodox" and "illegal..."
An inspector general's report released last week exposed the internal strife under Jaczko. The internal watchdog said he intimidated staff members who disagreed with him and withheld information from members of the commission...
The tactics disclosed in the investigative report are just the latest in a saga unfolding since President Barack Obama put the former aide to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, the Nevada Democrat who is Yucca's leading opponent, at the helm of the agency in May 2009...
Emails and documents gathered by investigators on three House committees and reviewed by The Associated Press, along with interviews with NRC staff members, paint an even more damning portrait of the NRC leader. They also raise questions about whether the agency's independence and scientific integrity have been compromised to advance a political agenda.
"He was put there to stop Yucca Mountain, and that is what he is doing," said former NRC chairman and commissioner Dale E. Klein...
The revelations come after the Japanese nuclear crisis exposed the risks associated with storing spent fuel in pools at a nuclear plant and after reports showing that $15 billion has been spent on Yucca Mountain even though it may never open...
Rep. John Shimkus, R-Ill., put it more bluntly: "Science, existing law, and the need for long-term nuclear waste storage seem to be missing from this discussion," he said...

Sadly, things like this don’t have much of an effect on me anymore. I think I have Outrage Fatigue.
It's understandable, and they count on it.
As we can see from the debacle in Japan, having a spent fuel pool located in the vicinity of the reactor itself is a disaster-multiplier. We really need to get Yucca Mountain in the condition where it can accept waste/spent reactor fuel pellets.
Maybe we can store all that spent fuel in Obama’s pie hole ... it surely is large enough—and it obviously has no other good use.

So then....., Obama by proxy (manipulating Aide to Reid Jaczko to head NRC) had placed Harry Reid “the Nevada Democrat who is Yucca’s leading opponent” in charge of the NRC is how I see it.
Harry Reid isn’t against Yucca Mountain.....He is all for government spending on Yucca Mountain. He just doesn’t want any nuclear material stored there. :)
If they didn't want to send everyone back to a feudal system, where we are burning dung in our right wing hovel to stay warm, except themselves, would they do things differently? Something about IngSoc, and the Inner Party and the Outer Party...
Remember, if you’re not outraged, it means you
haven’t been paying attention.
That spent fuel should be processed to remove Plutonium. It still has a huge amount of useable energy. Thank Carter for wasting so much potential energy with his SALT treaty.
I think they should gather up all the spent nuclear fuel and ship it off to Chicago.
USNBandosan I think you are close.
Yucca, Like the WIPP, the debacle @ Hanford and others, is a nuclear grade monument to waste and fraud. A Carter legacy spins off of No reprocessing of the “spent” fuel rule. Areva is building facilities to process Nuc fuels from dirt, wilst we spend and lament the fact that dirty Harry and his quisling hate Yucca. Our selection of the recently re-elected (in Nevada, a state with 12% unemployment), Harry is but a nuclear aspect.
A disgustingly accurate and all too common example of upper management federal rot we are selecting and accepting, that will sink this great country if we dont get it fixed.
R.
Actually, a lot of it is there already. Chicago is surrounded by 4 nuclear reactors.
