Had they not reported the emails it would have been too obvious that they really only wanted dirt -- which was obvious anyway.
They've realized the PR hit they've taken for making such a fuss about getting the emails so now stories like this are basically damage control for the MSM. As you pointed out it is too late because they're not fooling anyone.
