My wife and I just visited Yellowstone National Park for our 33rd wedding anniversary last Thursday. I'm almost 55. We decided to take the hike down to the brink of the lower falls on the Yellowstone River. It's a 600 foot drop in elevation on the trail from the parking lot down to the brink. The elevation in that area is 7600 ft. That little walk will get your attention...especially if you're not acclimated to the elevation.

Five years ago I went through aviation survival training at age 50. Jumping in the pool with a full flight suit, helmet and steel toed boots for a 15 yard underwater swim was quite a challenge. They refer to the course as "High Risk Training". The price for failure goes way beyond humiliation.
