They say it’s always darkest before the dawn, but I’ve never been able to find out where to find them and ask what they meant. If New York is enough of an instructive microcosm, the last of the tolerance romantics is forced by a rising level of chaos to face reality, and accepts that things need to be sorted out, which requires accepting hard reality, making hard decisions, and sometimes using hard methods. All the work done by those who cared about what was happening does culminate in this, like how a seedling sets its roots before sprouting its leaves, much of that growth invisible.
