My main goal is the defeat of Obama in 2012, and I'll support the candidate who has the best chance of doing that.
I agree. I do draw the line, though, on social, moral issues (abortion, homosexuality). I will never, knowingly, vote for a professed, confirmed pro-abort. So, Giuliani, for instance, would never get my vote.
If you actually go out and talk to Texans of latino heritage, you would quickly find out that they do NOT want open borders and millions of illegals depressing wages, filling up hospital wards, taking government handouts and the obligatory crime increase. Perry's positions are classic RINO pandering, hoping to win more of the latino vote - which he still lost to Bill White.
Perry won the GOP nomination with 51%. Had there been a stronger Conservative challenger, he may have lost. But when you are running against RINO Kay Bailey Hutchison and Debra Medina, who turned out to be a nutcase, he should have smoked them both. Conservatives had little choice but to select Perry.
I feel like I have to post this daily. Texas is successful because of its culture of self-reliance, low taxes, no income tax, right-to-work, oil & gas exploration and diversified economy. Business is attracted here for much of the above and other factors like weather, location, less regulation etc.
As Governor, Perry should take some credit for the state doing well and not screwing it up, but he is hardly responsible for its overall success.
Would he be better than Romney, Pawlenty, Newt etc. Absolutely. Is he a committed Conservative? Absolutely not. He is a political opportunist that changed to the GOP - like many politicians, when it became obvious the Democrats were doomed in Texas. In the DC culture, he would slide back towards the left.
I support Palin. If a strong Conservative emerges as the nominee, I will gladly support them. Please, in the name of the Founding Fathers, do not give me yet another, "finger-to-the-wind, milquetoast, don't rock the apple cart" RINO as the GOP nominee. This will be the most important election in my lifetime. If we do not elect someone willing to drastically change direction of the Federal government, we are doomed. Another squishy "let's all get along" RINO will seal our fate.

My sentiments as well. Hopefully it's an ugly choice we won't have to make, the Republican party would be patently insane to put forth such an absurdly sinful presidential nominee.
I sure do understand that sentiment, but I see so many people being driven by fear about general election polls when the general election is over a year out.
Frankly, I think we need to do more than just beat Obama. If we elect another Bush type, we're not going to SOLVE any of the problems we have now and we can kiss our future goodbye.
Jim DeMint once said "I’d rather lose fighting for the right cause than win fighting for the wrong cause." I submit that the right cause is to elect a conservative with a record of LEADING on important issues. We need someone who doesn't need to be smacked in the head to know what common sense is. We need someone who doesn't put his/her finger in the wind to see which way to go on an issue.
If we give that up to pick someone who 'can win', based on polls this far out and the commentary of pundits who are wrong on every major issue of the day, we've already lost.
When looking at potential candidates, I wish we'd stop looking at the superficial and start looking at real substance.
Does --insert candidate here-- have a record of tackling corruption in both political parties? This is a very important issue to me, since damn near everything in this country from the President on down to our local community, is filthy and corrupt at every level and in both parties.
Does --insert candidate here-- have a record of educating people about issues and swaying public opinion on them? The Democrats are going to use their usual demagoguery to vilify everything we want to do to actually fix things. We need someone who can break it down and is willing to put in the time to change minds and make people aware of what the plans are?
Does --insert candidate here-- have a record of actually getting big changes that nobody ever thought possible done? Because we have a lot of big things that our political class thinks are impossible to do. And if we don't do them, we're going down the tubes.
I'm going to add more to this list of questions, but if I don't hit post now, I'm going to lose my whole work day typing this. ;)
If I could plug Rick Perry or any other candidate's name into those questions and answer 'yes', I'd be maxing out contributions to any of them and working my butt off for them through the election. So, if someone comes up with another candidate who fits that bill, I'm ready to support them.

Kind of slow...I’ve already looked, been looking, will continue to look...and the only one I’ve seen with a CLEAR RECORD of having done what she said she would do, who operates independently of the majority of republicans and has taken the policy lead for going on two years now.
Sarah endorsed Perry, as opposed to Hutchison for pete’s sakes and as opposed to Bill White! She took the lead to keep those two out of the running! She SUCCEEDED!
Palin endorsed McCain in an election he already had bagged...and now she doesn’t owe McCain a damned thing...in fact now he owes her and doesn’t dare pull his KRAP! She has SUCCEEDED in cornering him! He can’t now come back and say she’s not competent, now can he?
Your problem, seems to be that you want to overlook her in favor of some she/man establishment type...rather than see her as a viable candidate.
Even Huckabuck and Newt know they can’t compete... Pawlenty’s mea culpa on cap ‘n trade was not the defining moment for him the establishment thought it would be. Yet you want to discount that? And call it a slight flaw? Not to mention Pawlenty is a dullard who couldn’t inspire a chicken to pluck up a june bug, even.
Besides, there’s not one thing wrong with us all seeing the clear candidate we to succeed and backing her with the full force of our support. This bull krap about ooooo..oooo we must be careful...ooooo...oooo we need to check out everybody....oooo...ooooo...we want somebody who can win...ooooo....this...ooooo....that. We’ve been watching this closely for going on over two years yet. Why should we wait, just because others want to eyeball all the she/male republicans and RINO’s. Would be a shame wouldn’t it, if republicans united behind the one clear true conservative candidate and pushed her to run and win it, wouldn’t it?
I know our Hispanic neighbors up the street don't like the illegal problem. The wife still has the bottom half of the McPain / Palin 2008 bumper sticker on her back window of her car. Don't get her started talking politics. They left CA because it was too liberal and there were too many illegals.
I stand corrected. He signed an Executive Order in 2007. Still a troubling stand for a Conservative governor to make.
Perry is an amnesty-loving Giuliani-endorsing big government RINO.

Don't mistake that statement by me as support for Rick Perry. I did say at this point, given the current field, I wasn't ready to dismiss him out of hand. Hardly an endorsement.
Your points are well taken, so we don't need to play "who's the biggest, baddest conservative" game and obviously it's far too early to give a hoot about polls.
Your choices of leadership, teaching and convincing, confronting corruption, inate common sense, and bringing about major positive course correction are the proven, demonstrable qualities the nation needs. Sarah Palin clearly comes to mind.
It is certainly imperative that such a candidate emerges and wins. America can not long endure less.
I did not call all Californians losers nor do I care where the site is based. I hope “right thinking conservatives” do not care about the geographic location of their favorite sites, but I would have to ask somebody who knows what “right thinking conservatives” think about that. The links work the same for me, even from across the world.
