Force Detains Suspected Insurgents, Destroys Explosives

WASHINGTON, June 9, 2011 – A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several people with suspected ties to the Taliban and destroyed explosives during an overnight security operation in the Maiwand district of Afghanistan’s Kandahar province yesterday, military officials reported.

The Afghan-led force was searching for a Taliban leader who directs a Taliban cell in the district and coordinates the movement of narcotics and homemade bombs. The force found homemade explosives, bomb-making materials and an assault rifle.

In other operations in Afghanistan yesterday:

-- Based on intelligence reports, a combined force in Kunduz province’s Imam Sahib district detained several suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban facilitator who supports the Kunduz attack network, which is responsible for the assassination of Afghan government officials and attacks against Afghan security forces.

-- A combined force in Helmand province’s Nahr-e Saraj district detained a suspected insurgent and destroyed 5 pounds of opium while searching for a Taliban leader responsible for planning and commanding operations against Afghan and coalition forces. He also coordinates the procurement of weapons and distributes them to fighters in the district.

-- A combined force in Kandahar province’s Maiwand district found 30 bags of marijuana seeds and 13 empty shell casings.

-- Based on intelligence tips, a combined force in Paktika province’s Yahya Khel district detained several insurgents while searching for a Haqqani terrorist network leader who is the Haqqani-appointed governing official for attacks in the district and is responsible for planning and coordinating attacks against Afghan forces.

-- In Paktika province’s Mota Khan district, a combined force detained two suspected insurgents during a security operation targeting a Haqqani network leader who is the Haqqani-appointed governing official for attacks in the district and is responsible for the acquisition and planting of roadside bombs targeting Afghan security forces.

-- A combined force in Logar province’s Baraki Barak district detained several suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader responsible for conducting attacks against Afghan government officials and who directs device bombing cell in the area.

-- In Khost province’s Sabari district, a security force detained a suspected insurgent while searching for a Haqqani leader involved in placing roadside bombs targeting Afghan and coalition forces.

-- A combined force in Wardak province’s Sayyidabad district detained two suspected insurgents and found bomb-making materials in Onkhai Valley during an operation to clear a known Taliban safe haven associated with roadside-bomb attacks.

-- A combined force found eight 76 mm high-explosive rounds in Paktia province’s Gardez district.

In operations June 7:

-- A combined force recovered explosives and materials used to make homemade bombs in Qalah-ye Zal district’s Tsamows Kol village in Kunduz province.

-- A combined force found 15 rocket-propelled grenades in Kandahar province’s Zharay district.

-- A coalition force in Kandahar province’s Panjwai district seized two assault rifles, six full rifle magazines, 1,600 7.62 mm rounds, a machine gun feeding plate and a chest rig.

-- A combined force in Paktia province’s Gardez City detained a known bomb facilitator, recovered a homemade bomb and stopped a planned attack on personnel working for coalition forces.
