Actually I don’t need to rethink anything. You stated what I was trying very inartfully to state myself.
I believe a gay person has had that kind of attraction from early childhood. I further believe that attraction is NOT a choice. The only choice part comes in when they choose to act on their desires. However, if they chose to never act upon their urges, it wouldn’t make them any less gay, it would just make them celibate.

Well, I’ve spoken to members of the ex-gay groups who have told me that they are NOW after undergoing a spiritual transformation NO LONGER ATTRACTED to people of the same sex.
Also, I’ve also spoken to ex-gays who tell me that they WERE NOT attracted to people of the same sex sometime in their early lives UNTIL some incident occurred in their lives such that they were slowly INFLUENCED.
They tell me that it is possible to be INFLUENCED into a lifestyle.
One person I spoke to was a boxer who only loved women. He got involved in some illegal activity that caused him to be jailed for 5 years ( he was out after 4 for good behavior ). He told me that he became influenced into the gay lifestyle while in prison.
It took him years to get out of that attraction, but after being spiritually transformed, the same sex attraction is gone.
Unless these people are lying, I have little reason to disbelieve them.
So, based on these testimonies, I still believe you ought to rethink your theory.
