EU offers farmers 210 mil. euros over food scare
The European Union has offered to pay 210 million euros or about 300 million dollars in financial aid to farmers affected by the E. coli outbreak in Europe.
EU farm commissioner Dacian Ciolos said in Brussels on Wednesday that the EU's compensation scheme will cover cucumbers, tomatoes and 3 other vegetables. He added that the proposed amount is equal to half the value of losses incurred by the farmers.
The E. coli outbreak has claimed the lives of more than 20 people, mostly in Germany, leading to a sharp drop in vegetable consumption across Europe.
But authorities have yet to pinpoint the source of the infection.
An estimate put the loss suffered by European farmers at more than 570 million dollars.
Ciolos said the EU is ready to pay additional financial aid if it is deemed necessary.

P!
"Organically grown food (even with e coli spreading fertilizers) good.
Genetically modified grown food bad."
I don’t believe in E coli danger. I really think there’s got to be something wrong with you before hand or you won’t be harmed(more than a day or 3 of diarrhea ) by E coli.
Don’t people wash their vegetables anymore? Adding hydrogen peroxide in the water helps too but I suppose the EU farm commissioner doesn’t know those tricks.
Thanks for the ping.
Moral Hazard no longer exists in our modern world.
Does ANYBODY face “privatized losses”? Other than the taxpayers?
Why aren’t these farmers getting vigorously sued — instead of freaking BAILED OUT?
The government ordered them to destroy crops, that were NOT tainted.
