CHICAGO/BOSTON (Reuters) The heat wave baking the country's mid-section entered its third day on Wednesday with high temperatures taking a deadly toll from Milwaukee to Memphis.
The hot, humid air, which the National Weather Service warned could create triple-digit heat index readings in many places, also began to spread into the northeast, where temperatures across Southern New England were expected to climb into the 90s on Wednesday and inch higher toward potentially historic numbers on Thursday, meteorologists said.
In Wisconsin, a 69-year-old resident of a Milwaukee nursing home was found dead Tuesday evening after being left unattended outside for three hours in the afternoon heat, which reached a record 97 degrees on Wednesday and hit 90 by early Wednesday afternoon.
The Milwaukee medical examiner is conducting an autopsy to determine if the extreme heat was a factor in the man's death, Karen Domagalski, the agency's operations manager, told Reuters.
In Tennessee, officials said a 75-year-old Memphis woman and a 60-year-old man in Brighton both died of the heat, which reached 98 on Tuesday and was 93 by early Wednesday afternoon.
The heat -- in the mid to upper-90s throughout Tennessee -- coincides with the kickoff of two massive music festivals that has officials in the state bracing for heat-related calls.
The CMA Music Festival kicks off on Wednesday with a parade in Nashville, but the big events begin Thursday, most of them outdoors at LP Field, the open-air home of the Tennessee Titans football team.
Meanwhile, about 85 miles southeast of Nashville, 80,000 fans are expected for Bonnaroo, the huge, four-day rock festival that takes place annually in former farm pastures in Manchester.
Fans are expected to jam up Interstate 24 as they begin arriving on Wednesday for the event, which begins Thursday. ..

Hell fire in Mississippi
Balmy 93 here in NC.
Little cooler today in Michigan, we only topped out at 95 today.
98 in Baltimore.
we’re flirting with 80 right now.. pocono is running so it’s gonna be hot and sticky all over the east coast..
weird weather pattern, minnesota was cooking too
We live with high heat in Texas, but most of us are equipped with air conditioning and our bodies acclimate to going out in the heat too.
I recall a number of years ago when so many elderly died in Paris from the heat........while the young people went out of the city on ‘vacation’. Thoughtful..
Wouldn’t be surprised to see a bad hurricane this year in Texas, things are strange and we have been TOO lucky down here so far.
They’ve been getting some pretty good storms across the eastern UP and into Canada.
I have a very dear friend who lives in Charlotte. He owns a small business that requires him to be outdoors most of the workday. He’s been suffering with the heat, and having to end work early. Doesn’t seem to be an end in sight per forecasts. He says this is unusual for Charlotte, but they had an extended period of high 90’s much of last spring and summer too.
I don’t mind the heat as much as the humidity. we used to start work early too.. still sweat our butts off but we weren’t late for happy hour.
I’m sorry. I live in the Sacramento region, which gets a couple of dozen 100-degree+ days as a matter of course every summer. (Although we just went through a week of 60-degree weather the first week of June. Very strange and cool spring this year.) I am from Houston, where temperatures and humidity race each other for the 100 mark every day during the summer. So I am supposed to believe that temperatures in the low to mid 90’s, even with high humidity, is a “killer heat wave”?
Lol about happy hour. Can’t miss that. :)
Summer has come to Georgia, was a nice spring though.
Not looking forward to the rest of summer.
At least I don’t live downtown any more, I expect
we will see some ugly situations as the heat takes
it’s toll on the urban dwellers.
This is the first time in three years we have had 90s-100s in early June. Back in the late 80s-through the 90s, it was common. Also common is a 2-3 week period of cool, rainy weather the last part of June. From the forecast, that is in store starting tomorrow.
Maybe we’ll actually have a moderate winter this year. We are certainly due for one. If that happens, I expect screams of “Global Warming”, but I will appreciate it, for a change.
The Greenies in La Crosse decided this was a good time to protest the use of air conditioning. They are “standing up” to “the bosses” and demanding an end to “being frozen” in the workplace, since they are “not fragile electronic chips” and “can stand the heat”. That will work, especially in one of those closed-up Green buildings, I suppose.
Today is our first warm day this year, around 78. A hard freeze killed my freshly planted tomatos last week.
Wohooo It was 105 here in Houston on Sunday...
I remember living in Phoenix Arizona... It was 115 one summer... but it was a “dry” heat.
