This article is so alarmist. The author uses dramatic language like "...bring in and store massive amounts of military equipment..." Get real, in the 1970's, the USSR processed uranium by building a facility inside of a mountain (I believe it was in violation of a treaty limiting nuclear material production as to the reason of building it inside of a mountain). American satellites were able to pick up heat signature from water discharged from the facility. And China, today, cannot build a sub without US satellites picking up on it.

There is no way whatsoever, China will be able to use these economic zones for military purposes without it being known to the US government. The author's depiction sounds like a plot for a James Bond or Tom Clancy movie.

China has excess capital and needs a place to store it. Latin America, Africa, etc. simply does not provide enough places to park her capital. And building economic zones and providing jobs for Americans is a good way to do it. American and other Western countries have spent hundreds of billions on China investing there. China is sending some of those investments back. This is how trade is being balance.

In the long run, most Americans will welcome Chinese investments. There will always be some, like this author, who will display an alarmist attitude, but I'm convinced, most people will willingly accept Chinese investments into the US.
