“And then had his life ruined as he was prosecuted for ‘escalating’ the conflict and using his weapon in a non-life threatening situation. “

A mob attacks and beats you (and others), and you are willing to bet your life and the life of your wife or children that murder may not be the aim/result of a mob attack?

Mob attacks by definition are deadly. You have no control over them. You are not required to suffer a mob beating to “avoid” escalating the situation. The mob escalated the situation.

To avoid “escalating” the situation, you will be required to be beaten mercilessly by the mob, and at some point, the odds are you WILL become defenseless and unable to defend yourself. . . too late then to do anything about it. But at least you didn't escalate the situation.

Of course, if you wish to put your life in the hands of a riotous mob and trust them NOT to murder or injure you, your wife, your child, that is your choice.

Bottom line: you have the right to defend yourself, up to and including the use of deadly force.

“Bottom line: you have the right to defend yourself, up to and including the use of deadly force.”

Only in SOME states.

If you were to use deadly force in such a situation in a state like Connecticut or Massachusetts, the post-outcome action by the state would probably be quite different than if you were so attacked in Texas.

Look at what happened to Bernard Goetz in the famous subway attack.

You post is a good one, and your logic entirely correct. But again, in some states you’d be tried as a criminal for “defending yourself”. That doesn’t mean you’d be _convicted_, but the “laws of self-defense” are not equal everywhere....

Just sayin’....

The Bernie Goetz jury agreed with you. He was acquitted of murder and attempted murder. Unfortunately his weapon was found to be illegal (of course, NYC), and he served 8 months for that. Still, a lot better than being carved up or beaten to a pulp.
