I got in a discussion on facebook about this when a friend of mine posted a video of Palin's comments. The narrator of the video said at the conclusion of Sarah's comments something like, "Everyone knows that the colonists were warned by lantern."
What makes this whole thing so sad, and angering is that my friend who posted the video presented it with a comment about 'how stupid Palin is and just think, she was almost a heartbeat from the Presidency. How scary is that!' My friend, incidentally, is the chair of the history department at a university in the Midwest. She did not participate in the ensuing discussion when I, as politely as I could, told her that perhaps she was wrong.

I’m not surprised by the ignorance of the chair of the history dept you speak of. These people live in a fog of liberal guilt and sense of entitlement only an academic elite can achieve. They’ve been saturated with the theory of teaching but hold little depth of knowledge or understand of their field of study.
