PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A Philadelphia Common Pleas Court judge today granted a temporary restraining order against the School District of Philadelphia, putting a halt for now on the school district’s plan to lay off 1,500 teachers.

Philadelphia schools superintendent Arlene Ackerman confirmed on Monday that the district was sending out layoff notices to 3,024 employees, including the teachers. She said teachers at the district’s worst-performing schools (dubbed “promise academies” by the district) would not be subject to the layoffs because she wanted to minimize disruptions at those failing schools.

The Philadelphia Federation of Teachers went to court on Monday afternoon, asking for a temporary restraining order to prevent the school district from moving forward with the layoffs, which the union says must done according to seniority — including “promise academy” teachers — according to its collective bargaining agreement.

Lots of issues at work here: union teachers, shrinking budgets, a fight for the scraps, and thugs trying to "restore funding" using the courts again - when there ARE no more tax dollars to be had.

The worst of it, in my opinion, is the rampant black racism on display. The fat administrator is deliberately laying off more white teachers than black teachers, and citing the reason as needing to keep the teachers at the "worst performing schools" which she dubs "promise academies" (LOL!) - because that is where the black students are. That is simply a fact.

Incredible.

I wonder how all the white teacher union Obama supporters felt when they got their pink slip from the Administrator, even though they were not first in line to be laid off.

“thugs trying to “restore funding” using the courts again”

It works in NJ everytime! The NJ Supremes give the Abbott Districts everything and in turn they deny the rest of us. Throwing money at the problem districts won’t change an f’n thing.

Redistribution at it’s finest!

I thought we had three branches of government.

The courts have been assuming authority they really do not have.

When will the other two branches seek to balance it out again.

(I know the answer is because the courts do what liberal legislators can not do).

It's the end of the world as we know it.

Is Arlene Ackerman having delusions of obtaining a position in the Obama cabinet via her off the wall directive?

Did she order anyone to come up with the money to pay for it?

Where they hell do judges think they have the authority to ORDER what they want done?

Philadelphia is an unqualified mess of a city.

This looks to be a p*ssing contest between the PSD and mayor's office.
