Not so sure I want to serve with people who settle on the service as a last resort. Sort of like well I never wanted to go into the military, but I can’t find any other work. That’s not the type of people I want to serve with IMHO.
Not to worry, the military isn't taking these folks anymore. There was a time when after every employer closed the door in your face, well, there's always the Army. Those days are gone. The military is in the historically unprecedented position these days to take only the best from a huge pool of interested applicants. Good for the military? Sure. Right now. Wait till things get better out in the civilian world.
Fact is people join the military for myriad reasons, only one of which is patriotism. People join to do their duty. They join because of family tradition. Indeed, some join because they want to be tested in battle, to get the opportunity to fight and kill. Some join to get away from a bad crowd back home, to escape their lousy town, loser friends and family. Others join to see the world. Some join for college money. And yes, many enlist because it is a job that pays well with great benefits --for now.

My response....
In 1957, I graduated from a small High School in a small town in East Tennessee. My family was poor, college was not in my future and there was no prospects for meaningful work.
Since I had no car, I hitch-hiked 12 miles to a recruiters office so I could join the Navy.
I could go on and on about the Avionics technical schools I completed and the BS degree I worked hard for.
If I am not the type of people you would want to serve with, you sir have a problem.
I take offence to your statement and you have no clue about what the hell you are talking about.
G’day
