Boehner introduces alternative resolution on Libya
WaPo ^ | Thursday, June 2, 8:24 PM | David A. Fahrenthold

President Obama could get a second chance to sell Congress on the military operation in Libya, thanks to some last-minute help from an unlikely ally: House Speaker John A. Boehner.

On Thursday, with some liberals and conservatives trying to get Congress to force a withdrawal from Libya, Boehner (R-Ohio) offered an alternative. He introduced a resolution that would give Obama 14 more days to make his case.

Boehner’s resolution would vent congressional anger, stating that “the president has not sought, and Congress has not provided, authorization” for the operation. It also contains a threat that Congress might cut off funding if Obama defies Congress.

But the resolution stops short of demanding that the operation stop and doesn’t declare that Congress officially disapproves of it.

“It does not have Congress taking a stand,” said Rep. Michael R. Turner (R-Ohio), who had attracted more than 60 cosponsors for a separate bill saying that Congress disapproved of the Libya operation. Obama “has already had 75 days. I don’t believe that there’s additional information that he’s going to provide.”

Never. That would let the Dems run the ad, “The Republican House tried to cut-off funding for our troops in the middle of a war! Traitors!”

Why make an alternative at all?

Do what the law says.

Tell Obama to come to Congress forthwith and present his case or impeach him for his refusal. Obama is not entitled to a second chance. He swore an oath to obey the laws of this country and he isn’t doing it and Boehner and the Congress are letting him slide. It’s time Oabma found out that he is not King.

Just when the GOP can nail Obama’s hide to the wall with the illegal war, they not only go along with it, they encourage it.

We didn't impeach him for seizing an entire industry, or for ignoring judges orders. We won't impeach him for an illegal war either. We're closer to the torches and pitchforks than impeachment.

I'll forgive Boehner all this patty cake garbage if he holds the line on the debt ceiling. I don't have much hope.

I was so happy we took the House in the last election. I know just about everyone here shared in that elation. I simply can’t believe the awful luck we’ve had being saddled with this incompetent, gutless, stooge Boehner. If ever we needed a strong man at the helm it is now. Boehner simply has to go.

Maybe I’m naive but I think Boehner is doing a great job. The msm controls the narrative and since the Nov. elections he hasn’t let them sink their hooks in on one issue where they can really make the Republicans look bad. He’s fighting a rear-guard action until 2012. Politically, I thinks he’s another Bedford Forrest. Under-appreciated but did a hell of a job.

I think he made a slow start and was reluctant in his challenges to Obama, but he has gotten serious ever since he threw down his challenge on the debt ceiling, and the fact is that Obama has been unable to get any more of his awful anti-American legislation through congress.

I agree with you. If Boehner manages to hold the line, he is doing an adequate job.

I do too and I think it's a shame that here on FR so many are so quick to say "Boehner's fault" when the fault is so often obviously Obama's.

Boehner's heading up 1/3 of the Govt and "holding the line" as you put it until we can get some more leverage in the Gov't. As it is, he's passed some good legislation recently and I think he's going to pull off the debt limit thing too.

Boehner is too nice. Republicans are too nice. This is why they get their heads handed to them year after year, issue after issue.

It's a genuinely ILLEGAL WAR. A violation of federal law. Oh we'll give you two more weeks to make the case, Mr. President even after 10 weeks of military action. Bah.

Whattatool!

Someone needs to take him to the woodshed.

Why should we help a failed President who is breaking the law?
