Trying to analyze “Crime in Africa” is only slightly less inaccurate than trying to analyze “Crime on Planet Earth”.
Africa has 47 countries, about 2,000 languages and about 3,000 people groups (tribes). Some areas are safer than others. Some areas & cultures are safer that some US areas & cultures.
One list of “Homicides per 100,000 Population” shows 12 African countries with lower rates than the USA rate of 5.0.
New Orleans murder rate is 52
Newark is 29
Oakland is 26
Washington, DC is 24
Baltimore is 37
Kenya is 3.6
Sierra Leone is 2.6
Cameroon is 2.3
Uganda is 8.7
The Bahamas & Brazil are 22
Jamaica is 60
Mexico is 15
BTW I’m not “looking through rose colored glasses.” My family & I were ambushed by Ugandan rebels in 1986. In 1980, I melted part of my helicopter engine getting away from Tanzanian troops firing at me because their commander forgot to show them my clearance. My wife & I also have shared water with an AK-47 armed tribal warrior we encountered 30km from the nearest town, then who thanked us and continued on his way.

Be aware of your surroundings.
Stay away from nasty areas unless you have superior firepower and flexible rules of engagement.
