Any idea what that flame is that is venting near the tail of the ship?

And if we can put a muslim on the moon then,

one day

we could put all of the muslims....

on the moon.

I'd settle for the stratosphere, environmental impact be damned.

How’s it go? It’s not the fall that’ll kill ‘em, it’s the sudden deceleration?

The HUD display from the pilot was fantastic.

Flaring from the APU's, I believe. It's normal.

My guess - and only a guess - is they burn off excess fuel from the positioning rockets so they don’t have to deal with it.

Thanks. The narrator just mentioned APU venting.

Oh I see it’s not positioning rockets but APUs (auxiliary power units) Either way it’s hydrazine and that stuff is absolutely nasty.

I was sitting on our balcony at our hotel at DisneyWorld and heard the sonic boom at 2:31 am. Didn’t see the Shuttle though. The de-orbit fireworks must have been over before it crossed my horizon.

I was in high school when the Russians shot sputnik into orbit, I well remember projects Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, then the Shuttle. I am having a hard time believe it is almost over. No more American manned space flight after the next one. It makes me sick.

I watched the Apollos, but was always ravenous about any space info - Mercury, Gemini, Shuttle, etc. Made models, consumed magazine and and articles and books.

Quite frankly, I haven't been able to accept the end of American manned space flight... doesn't compute. I don't think I want it to.

Here's something fascinating the Brits are up to, though (watch the video, especially):

Skylon development given go-ahead by UK Space Agency

It's that sudden vaporization, due to the thermal shock, as they go, suffused with an incandescent glow, should they be stupid enough to corner Israel.
