I think the author is a bit optimistic. It seems that, no matter how bad a candidate the Dems put up, a large chunk of Americans will vote Democrat. If the Republicans are going to win, they need to put up a very good candidate.

Nearly half the people in this country are getting benefits paid by the other half. All the Dems need to do is nudge that line a little further over, and they will never lose another election. That's why they keep saying that we need to tax the rich more. They want to buy more votes. And the rich get favors from the Dems behind the scenes to compensate for the higher taxes. Like waivers from Obamacare for their companies.

By the way, did anyone notice this? The article says: Nixon and Ford were elected

Ford wasn't elected President. He wasn't even elected Vice President.

You failed to complete the equation.

If the Democrats raise taxes on the "rich"...and the really rich get favors behind the scenes...who actually gets screwed?

The middle class.
