WASHINGTON (AP) - In the first presidential election since the tea party's emergence, Republican candidates are drifting rightward on a range of issues, even though more centrist stands might play well in the 2012 general election.
On energy, taxes, health care and other topics, the top candidates hold positions that are more conservative than those they espoused a few years ago.
The shifts reflect the evolving views of conservative voters, who will play a major role in choosing the Republican nominee. In that sense, the candidates' repositioning seems savvy or even essential.
But the eventual nominee will face President Barack Obama in the 2012 general election, when independent voters appear likely to be decisive players once again. Those independents may be far less enamored of hard-right positions than are the GOP activists who will wield power in the Iowa caucuses, the New Hampshire primary and other nominating contests.

The term used “ More centrist” AKA lefty. The democrats/rino’s and MSM are so far left, they cannot even see the right..
Oh, yeah... like we didn’t learn anything from McCain who “drifted right” during campaigns, then made a mad dash back to the left after re-elections.
Thank you very much, but unless a candidate has been extremely conservative, consistently, for at least two decades, he/she is not an option. How stupid do they think we are?
This entire article is just another case of the media warning us that, if we want to defeat the Dems, we MUST pick a “centrist” candidate. Yeah, we saw what happened in 2008. The “independents” may have gone for Obama (something I’m not convinced of since it seems the libs always like to claim they are “independent, free thinkers, etc., and seem to like to twist the polls by claiming NOT to be a partisan hack) but it didn’t help that many disillusioned and disappointed conservatives simply stayed home. Funny how the press likes to play down that little fact.
Reagan was also a dimocRAT until he realized that their "principles" were no longer anti-Communist, pro-US defense and lots of other pluses and minuses. GOP to Reagan was the "party of the rich;" the party of "little guy," the donkeys drifted so far left, Reagan no longer recognized it and split.
Drifting to the right.
Like cheap prostitutes dressing modestly for a day.
Are you a friend of lying Mitt Romney? Reagan was pro life all his life. You can search for the rest of your life trying to prove he was pro choice, but you won’t be able to do it. The dems took Reagan’s no abortions except for the health of mother law and twisted it to mean anything they wanted it to mean.
Now loonies like the Mittbots have been spreading lies about Reagan being pro-choice since the last election. Reagan’s no abortions at all with an exception for the health of the mother is not a pro choice stand. Mitt’s protecting a woman’s right to choose to murder her baby is a pro-choice stand. Mitt Romney is a lying POS. I suggest you leave Mitts back pocket and stop spreading lies.
The voters usually fall for it.
Romney and Skerry should hold a flip-flopping contest.
Would be close.
I told many of my "friends" who jumped on his "corporate 'experience'" last time.
Some of these folk are nearly as pro-life as I am (only exception - save mother) and they accepted Mitt's "Road to Damascus" bs last time.
I told them then that a man well over 40, who'd known of the millions of innocent babies lost to "convenience" and greed, was no one I'd ever accept as a Presidential candidate!
Glad he "finally saw the light" but I believe that it was merely expedience to gain the nomination.
As to Mitt's "corporate 'experience'" it's somewhat akin to the Kennedy's "management of the family millions" and calling that success.
Never fear, we're on the same team friend.
Has nothing to do with Sarah Palin.
It’s like comparing apples to wingnuts.
I’m glad we’re on the same side. Here is something to put to rest all the ridiculous talk about Reagan being pro-choice. A little bit of history for you.
Here’s proof that Reagan was always pro-life not pro choice. Now you know the truth don’t get fooled again and do Romney’s work for him.
Hopefully this will help all the RINOs who try to paint Reagan as a liberal/moderate realize that we know the Rockefeller wing of the republican party and Reagan was never one of them.
LOL! Good analogy!
Many thanks for your post, friend.
