Vanity: Memorial Day from Lorraine American Cemetery in France
Monday, May 30, 2011 | Lakeshark

Over ten thousand graves of those who fell in the battles to defeat Germany.

The wall of names of the soldiers who were never found.

In the rows of markers.

The challenge to the living generations of conservatives, will we answer the call in these perilous times our nation faces?

Amen. And remember, because all FReepers do, that every day is Memorial Day. Remember always. Because that young American who never stopped being nineteen on a foreign battle and is still standing a post remembers . From Valley Forge to the Shahikot Valley they remember. Without The Brave there is no Land of the Free.

Because of your ping, I just sent my son an email thanking him for his 10th Mountain service, here is one of my favorite Airborne photos.

These are the identical things you see at the American military cemetery in Anzio, Italy, as well. As far as the eye can see, in every direction, rolling hills filled with crosses and stars of David. And a marble room carved with the thousands of names who perished unfound in those battles. All I could do was to cry.

All those boys who mostly never got to be parents, husbands, grandparents. I know we at home appreciate them. I’d like to hope that Europe does too.

They died on their feet so that we might not live on our knees.

I had a boss, and friend once, who’s indulgence I needed for a lot of foreign exercises that I was doing in an Airborne National Guard Company which was keeping me gone for months during the year.

I asked the boss why he was so tolerant of all my gone time, and he described how during the Battle of the Bulge, he found himself fighting alone on the battle field with the hulk of his burnt out tank offering some shelter, and only having three rounds left in his 45 pistol, when paratroopers rescued him, he said that anything that he can contribute to the Airborne is willingly given.

Understandably, all you could do was cry. We mourn for our fallen and how we possibly pay them proper tribute? We can’t. We have to trust in our Lord that He has and my faith tell me they are with Him in serene and happy peace.

May G-d always bless and keep you and your family, dearest friend, Yaelle.

I wish the Punch Bowl cemetery in Hawaii would get more showing. Many WWII vets including my brother are buried there. It is a beautiful place but oh so sobering. My granddaughter made a note of this years ago in the log book.
