Slavery was the chief reason the South rejected the election of Lincoln, who was elected on the platform of restricting slavery. Slavery was protected under the United States Constitution.
A more honest statement would be - " Southern States chose secession because Lincoln and his war party violated the terms of the Constitution."

No, Lincoln didn't violate anything.
The slave states lost an election and decided they wanted to secede.
They were seceding before Lincoln took office.
