He is struck by how many USPS executives started out as letter carriers or clerks. He finds them so consumed with delivering mail that they have been slow to grasp how swiftly the service's financial condition is deteriorating. "We said, 'What's your 10-year plan?' " Herr recalls. "They didn't have one."

Until hard-copy letters and envelopes are totally eliminated, there will be a need for a USPS-type organization. The people working there should be making less money, but the need for that type of gov. org. or government backed org. still exists.
“Constitutional amendment needed”? Where in the Constitution does that appear?
“The US constitution states that one of the functions of the US government is to provide a mail service.”
Lets make this a ceremonial office that sends out reminders about national holidays or something. Down size it to 1 percent of of its current operation.
The USPS is run like the big banks. All the ill deserved massive bonuses for the CEO’s who are dumber than rocks, and do stupid management things. I see it in my own post office.
The only difference between the post office and Goldman Sachs is that the post office does not have Ben Bernanke, and Timmy Geithner on their side to shuffle tax payer dollars to the till.
Why should ANYONE be required to do something that loses money? If I travel to the middle of nowhere in Alaska and set up an address, should there be a requirement that I be brought letters for $0.42? And should there be a requirement that someone come to my mailbox 6 times a week to see if I sent something?
I don't get it.

We had that happen to us a month ago. Our package showed up at the destination a couple of weeks later but without the Priority mail sticker on it that we paid for.
Based on my visits to various post offices in the metro Atlanta area, and elsewhere around the country, I would say much of this "problem" has to do with affirmative action based hiring and promotions, versus merit-based hiring and promotions.
They can all go to hell.
Let a private company take over and hire people who are REALLY interested in WORKING for REALISTIC pay and benefits, and providing outstanding customer service.
Article one, set up post offices and post roads. Google it.
I live in a large apartment project, and get a lot of small packages. FedEx sort of routinely drops them on the doorstep, tapping on the door as they walk away. UPS is good about making sure someone gets the package, but they have a tendency to just take it to the apartment manager without ever coming to my door. With them, I often discover the package has been delivered from checking the tracking site after I’ve spent several hours stuck at home waiting for it.
USPS, on the other hand, either puts it in the box or carries it to my door. When she comes to the door, she brings the rest of my mail too. Now that they’ve finally gotten their tracking system working, USPS is providing the superior service.
That’s just it. How does a private company peremptorily stop delivery of mail? You see no problem with some private company, UPS or FedEx, saying they are going to immediately stop delivery of mail that is unprofitable? Or just stop first class letters and envelopes. What happens to the mail then when grandma wants to send a birthday card and there’s no way to get it delivered?
Good point.
Shutdown the USPS and fire ALL the worthless slugs that work there.
Then fully privatize the functions the USPS used to purport to accomplish, and make it federal law that they can NOT be unionized (read that, taken over by union thugs).
DONE.
USPS is self-funding through postal fees as far as I know.
>> I had a money order stolen from the DC mail system.
Were you able to track the MO using the serial number on the receipt?
Postal service no tolerance? hah More like no action.
Sounds like a very ineffective bible study.
It seems the individual who posted the original comment doesn't see a problem!
Seven years ago at least one third of the junk mail in Seattle was pre-sorted off site by private companies, which were mostly owned and staffed by Asian immigrants.
The junk mail arrived at the main USPS facility near the airport, packed in official USPS trays, and perfectly sorted for each delivery route.
