A Taliban suicide bomber attacked a provincial governor's compound in Takhar, killing the police chief of northern Afghanistan and seriously injuring a top Nato commander. Two other Afghan officials were also reported to have died in the attack. Several international servicemen were reported injured by eyewitnesses.
German officials confirmed to Spiegel magazine Major General Markus Kneip, who commands Nato forces in the north Afghanistan, had received wounds that were "severe" but not life-threatening.
A Nato spokesman in Kabul confirmed western casualties but was unable to provide details.
The Taliban, meanwhile, claimed responsibility for the attack and pledged that "killing high ranking officials will continue."
Mujeebullah Rahman, the deputy director of the local council in the province of Takhar, said the attack took place at about 4pm when a meeting to discuss local security operations was ending.
"The bomber was waiting in the corridor, wearing the uniform of an Afghan policeman," Rahman said.
The attack capped a bloody 48 hours in which seven Americans, two British and two other Nato servicemen were killed by roadside bombs or by insurgents in the south of the country. So far 44 Nato soldiers have been killed this month. Nearly 200 have died this year.

"Die Infidels!"
I bet the ROE, and overall strategy will change once these “top” politicians and generals start getting targeted like the grunts in the field do. Things will change real quick when they start taking out field grade officers and commanders - watch. It’s all good to be friends with the Muhammedians and sounds awesome on paper - until it’s your own ass on the line. So much for “hearts and minds”.
Aren't the rules of engagement being written in D.C. by certain agenda-driven politicians?
FTR, in Iraq we lost 4221 during Bush's term and 233 during Zero's term, with a troop level high of 170,000 under Bush to less than 50,000 under Zero.
In Afghanistan, we lost 630 Americans from 2001 to 2008 and 965 from 2009 until the present time (although we went from about 38,000 troops when Zero took office to approximately 100,000 now).
So we're losing our beloved troops today at about the same rate as when that "evil Bush" was in office, and all we hear from the media is....crickets. Disgusting pigs!

How long is it going to take to end this war? We cannot just keep feeding our best and brightest to this monster of suicide and roadside bombs.
How easy is it to seek asylum in sweden?
Gotta cull as many Republican voters from the herd as possible before 2012.
