The California Assembly approved a bill to allow counties to opt out of a controversial federal immigration program that lawmakers said rips families apart, leads to racial profiling and erodes trust between law enforcement and the immigrant community.
Under the Secure Communities program, instated by President Obama, the fingerprints of anyone booked into a county jail are automatically cross-checked against immigration databases, and if a person is determined to be undocumented, local authorities hand them over to federal officials for deportation.
A growing number of law enforcement officials and public leaders across the U.S., however, are criticizing the program, saying it undermines their trust with immigrant communities and separates people, who have not been convicted of crimes, from their families. They note cases where individuals were deported after a simple traffic stop but never charged with a crime.
The measure by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco, seeks to allow counties to "opt-out" of participation in the program; two Bay Area counties - San Francisco and Santa Clara - have formally sought permission to do so, and several cities and counties around California have passed resolutions, are considering resolutions or have lobbied to support the bill, AB1081.

What’s the big deal? Segregationist counties were allowed to opt out of complying with the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act, right? /s//
J.C. Calhoun would be proud. Nullification is back—in pog form!
Funny how states & cities can’t enforce Federal immigration law, but they can just “opt out” of it.
How about the rest of the country opt out of sending them federal dollars?
I hope that is an idea President Palin adopts
Another wonderful and self-destructive action by CA. I hope they keep this up and become the poster child for 1st world nations to become 3rd world nations.
“...individuals were deported after a simple traffic stop but never charged with a crime...”

Uhhhh...yes...what part of ILLEGAL doesn’t the author understand?
Let them all be together in their own country.
Saying the USofA cannot deport ALL illegal aliens is one of the biggest ALINSKY inspired LIES of the Progressive-Liberals.

“...when newly elected Dwight Eisenhower moved into the White House, America’s southern frontier was as porous as a spaghetti sieve. As many as 3 million illegal migrants had walked and waded northward over a period of several years for jobs in California, Arizona, Texas, and points beyond.
President Eisenhower cut off this illegal traffic. He did it quickly and decisively with only 1,075 United States Border Patrol agents less than one-tenth of today’s force. The operation is still highly praised among veterans of the Border Patrol.”
IT CAN BE DONE AND IT MUST BE DONE. We have borders for a reason!
Families don’t have to be ‘split.’ Just give the US Citizen the option to deport with her/his family ... ALL CHILDREN are not considered US Citizens unless the Mother can prove her citizenship. If a family has foreign born and US born children, the entire family unit can opt to be deported as a family OR THEY CHOOSE to split their own family. The Gov’t doesn’t split them up, it’s their choice.
I am SICK of Congress being so LAZY and afraid to deport illegal aliens ... no matter where they come from ... they’re not ALL from Mexico and points South.
WHILE I’M ON A ROLL .......
We need to END “Fair Trade” which is UNFAIR TO the USofA. No Tax on goods 100% Manufactured in the USofA. HIGH TARIFFS on goods 100% Manufactured outside the USofA. And a sliding scale for goods partially manufactured in the USofA.
If CA can opt out of following federal laws, then AZ ought to be able to enforce federal laws the federal government has decided to opt out of enforcing.
Ping!
There is no undoing the damage being done to this country. These b**tards make life all that more difficult. At some point I would renounce my citizenship because I would not live under these destructive punks. This country is going downhill fast. California is a mess that they want to push on the rest of the country. This is what Demonrats do.
