U.S. Supreme Court orders California to release a third of its prisoners, about 32,000. California has around 142,000 felons and has already released 9,000.
Justice Antonin Scalia called the decision “staggering” and “absurd” and warns that “terrible things are sure to happen”. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. said the ruling conflicted with a federal law intended to limit the power of federal judges to order a release of prisoners.

Seventh U.S. Circuit Court: Chicago Fire Department must hire 111 blacks that passed the exam 16 years ago and payout about $30 million to thousands more black people that took the same test.
In 1995, the Fire Department randomly hired 1800 people that scored 89 or better. It was argued that had the random selection included everyone that scored above the original passing goal of 64, more blacks would have been selected.
