I cannot believe that I am defending Chelsea Handler....but here goes:
Without hearing the context of the interview, it sounds like her trying to make a joke.
Clearly a situation that I would not joke about, but sometimes “jokes” like that are defense mechanisms. Bad ones. And usually when you are trying to work the conversation away from a personal or sensitive point.
Her whole schtick is about being a 30-something woman, getting old, all that. In my mind I can hear her saying it in a way that would be a joke.
Personally, not funny. But again, she is on E! for a reason.
You don’t have to defend her, even if you like her show. :)
I was only responding to the one point she made, because I think those teen mom shows stink also. But to say that she made the right decision to have an abortion because otherwise she would have a 20 year old child now? I’m sorry, but that makes her a pretty shallow and selfish person. No, it doesn’t mean she would have a 20 year old child now, adoption was available even in the olden days 20 years ago. It only means a 20 year old would be alive today.
And if you think I’m speaking from a theoretical point of view, no, I’m not.
So, you can like her show, and still think she said something wrong/dumb/shallow/whatever. You can even pray for her. She sounds like someone who could use prayer.
Nobody can say for sure what she was thinking or feeling, but I doubt she felt very anxious or ill at ease. It's become a habit -- heck, a career -- for her to make comments like that. Sort of like with Joan Rivers or Joy Behar, but they have the "nutty old lady who doesn't really know what she's saying" defense.
