Funny thing was, this lady was actually very nice, she wasn’t a stereotypical rude New Jersey resident at all. She was a good cow-orker and a good mom as far as I could tell. She’d just been raised to think that anywhere south of the Capital Beltway was the Edge of the Known Universe—y’know, the types who think Deliverance and the Dukes of Hazzard were documentaries, where the maps were labeled “Here Be Republicans”. She probably thought anybody with a Southern accent would turn her children into tobacco-chewing NASCAR-loving cross-burning Reagan-worshipping racists in a day’s time. They only moved that far out because it was all they could afford when they moved down (the DC burbs being one of the few places in the late ‘80s that could rival NJ for housing costs). She hated it. She wanted to be closer in to town. Knowing her commute, I couldn’t blame her on that one.

What's wrong with NASCAR and Reagan?
I'll agree the other issues aren't something to aspire to.
