Currently the gulf foreign ministers are waiting in Riyadh for their envoy Abdulatf Al-Zayani who was just airlifted from the UAE embassy in Sana’a along with USA, UK and EU ambassadors after hours of siege by Saleh’s loyalists.

For over six hours Al-Zayani has been trapped in the emirates embassy since eleven this morning along with US, UK and the EU ambassadors who were meeting to discuss proceedings in the gulf initiative.

Envoys were air-lifted from the UAE embassy.

There hasn’t been any reporting indicating our embassies have been under any pressure during any of the previous ME blowups-—minimal “death to America”chants, etc. This has to be Silly Saleh himself getting cute. We still owe him one for letting the USS Cole get smacked so maybe this would be just the right time to send him a “get out of town” card?

"SANAA, Yemen — A mob of gunmen loyal to Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh for hours trapped the American, British and European Union ambassadors, as well as the Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, inside a diplomatic compound here on Sunday."

This has to be a put on for domestic consumption.

I’m still wondering why we had embassies there.

It's a courtesy extended to the Yeminis. If the U.S. didn't maintain a local embassy, the Yeminis would have to pay outrageous international overnight rates for sending their death threats and mailbombs.
