Spanish director Pedro Almodovar's latest thriller, "The Skin I Live In," had filmgoers fleeing the theater Thursday night at its gala premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, due to some aggressively violent and disturbing content. The film, which stars Antonio Banderas and budding actress Spanish actress Elena Anaya, focuses on a mad but brilliant surgeon (Banderas) who kidnaps a man who raped his daughter. The doctor's daughter killed herself from the grief and it drives him to take very drastic measures. This is where it gets complicated and disturbing. Banderas then gives the rapist a sex change and transplants his deceased daughter's face onto his body. He later has sex with the man he has brutally experimented on and turned into a woman....
Guests, among them a group of sweepstakes winners flown specially to Cannes by Stella Artois from the U.S. to enjoy a once in a lifetime movie premiere were horrified by the experience. That group of Americans left and did not come back to the theater following a partiularly violent rape scene in the middle of the film.
A second exodus occurred when Banderas' character had relations with his victim at the end of the film, when even some of the French, who have a reputation for a higher tolerance for disturbing themes than Americans, had had enough....
Critics have...fallen in love with the upsetting film and are placing it in contention for the highest Cannes honor, the Palme d'or.

Oh, pleeeeeease! Don’t they appreciate “art”? Get with it, Citizens.
This one sounds really sick.
liberals should love it.
Pedro Almodovar has always been crazy.
I thought it might be that the artsy fartsy crowd can’t tolerate a scene with a gun in it, but from the description, it sounds pretty bad.
Sounds seriously sick to me. I’m actually surprised he made this film, must be pretty desperate for a job, that’s all I got to say.
There is no sick. There is only ‘art’.. (sarc)
How far Banderos has fallen since Zorro.
I pray some Hollywood actors and directors get some principles and higher standards.
Last Tango in Paris killed Brando’s career, this will kill Banderas’ career as well.
My actress niece in LA says that mainstream films are boring and plebian.
The artist has to push the envelope.
My niece is lacking.
The only way to raise movie attendance is to lower the bar even more. Hollywood is so depraved and Godless as it is, this is nothing new. This will get an R rating and most of Americas babbling idiot children will attend with no parental intervention.
And the Cannes audience is industry and press only. No one off the street.
I loved Women on the Verge.
what has your niece been in?
You didn’t read the story, I take it.
Tarantino’s blood-fest ‘Grindhouse’ was another big flop.
You can safely bet that this horrid film will receive numerous Oscar nominations.
Almodovar isn’t a Hollywood figure. This is a spanish film made in Spain.
One day there were half a dozen or more of 'em groping and grappling and this young lady put the gun in her mouth and engaged one of the gentlemen who in turn engaged the gunman, or another woman, or whatever, and it all led back to the guy with the gun feeling the urge to PULL THE TRIGGER and he did and there was blood and brain parts all over the place.
These people tried to clean things up ~ but the cops came anyway due to the gunshot.
This Banderas thing seems a quite a bit milder than what I know actually happened at that aprtment, so I'd say "it's the gun". They didn't like the gun!
