Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, a laid-back Midwestern Republican who governed a Democratic-leaning state, is running for president and will declare his candidacy on Monday in the leadoff caucus state of Iowa, an adviser told The Associated Press.
The adviser, who disclosed the plans on the condition of anonymity in advance of next week's announcement, said Pawlenty will formally enter the race during a town hall-style event in Des Moines, Iowa.
He's choosing to make his long-expected bid official in a critical state in his path to the GOP nomination. Advisers acknowledge that Pawlenty, 50, must win or turn in a strong showing during next winter's caucuses in the neighboring state of Iowa to have any chance of becoming the Republican who will challenge President Barack Obama, a Democrat, next November.
After Monday's announcement, he will head to Florida, New Hampshire, New York and Washington, D.C.
The move is no surprise.
Pawlenty been laying the groundwork for a national campaign since John McCain passed him over in 2008 as his vice presidential nominee. He has worked to boost his national profile, assemble a staff, travel the country and build a fundraising network, all while positioning himself as a Republican with a record of resisting increases in taxes and government spending. He left the governor's post in January and he took the first step toward the presidency two months later by setting up an exploratory committee.
In the early stages of the campaign, he has struggled to raise his standing in polls or attract a niche constituency as Republicans with more star power former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and celebrity businessman Donald Trump dangled themselves as possible candidates, only to opt out of bids.

RE: im not voting for puslenty.
What if he were the GOP candidate? Will you stay home?

Definition
noun
- an insipid, unassertive or boring person. This common colloquialism is probably British in origin, but is also used, especially by school and college students, in the USA and Australia. It is one of many terms (wet, damp, dripping) equating weakness with water.
Yes, and then lament when Obama gets a second term.
.
And yes, I'd vote for him. I certainly wouldn't be staying home pouting if he were the nominee. But then I'd vote for ANYONE over the present Ditherer in Chief.
Wow! This is great news! I’m so excited!
Tom is one of the most dynamic politicians on the scene today.
Wait, what’s his name? Tom or is it Tim? Huh? Gee, I forget. I thought you were talking about someone else. I don’t know who this guy is so forget I said anything.
Right.
If you recognize the current administration for the ‘crime-in-progress’ that it is... then almost ANYTHING will be an improvement!!
Overall I like T-Paw. Biggest single reason why is that he managed to govern conservatively in a HEAVILY LIBERAL state.
BUT.
I have two big misgivings about T-Paw as a presidential candidate.
1. He’s a bit of a squish on some very “telling” issues, like Gore-Bal Warming. Like Newt. And he refuses to say he’ll cut the idiotic subsidies for ethanol. (Yeah, yeah, I know, Iowa realpolitik. I’d rather have someone with the balls to tell Iowans, I’m cutting your ethanol subsidies, and to explain WHY.)
2. Lacks charisma.
because he is breaching the fiduciary duty to Pawlenty by speaking without authorization or this is a controlled fraudulent leak, anonymous so his boss does not look like a desperate liar.
I will vote for him if he gets the GOP nomination. But hell will have to freeze over before I would vote for him in the primary.
RE: Hes a bit of a squish on some very telling issues, like Gore-Bal Warming
Tim Pawlenty acknowledges his mistake on this issue in his South Carolina debates. That’s better than the stubborn Mitt Romney who continues to defend the indefensible Romneycare.
As for charisma... I’ll take competence over it. Calvin Coolidge was called Silent Cal because he kept his mouth shut most of the time, but he led the USA out of a near depression into the roaring twenties.
I’ll take charisma with substance over “style with no substance” Obama anytime.
I agree about charisma. It sure as heck helps the right person GET ELECTED, though. In a choice between two equally competent conservatives, charisma is a big tie-breaker.
Al Gore is pleased!
