Fifty years after taking part in the Freedom Rides, Lewis issues a challenge for today's generation.
...
JL: I would love to see more people, especially young people, get involved in this whole issue of trying to demonize the Latino population. Too many of our brothers and sisters are being racially profiled because of their background, last name or the language they may speak. The state of Georgia is copying the state of Arizona, and I think there will be other states to follow the same path. When you take on the immigrant population, you're taking on all of us.
During the Freedom Rides, we were saying, in effect, you arrest one of us, you're going to arrest all of us. You beat 15 or 20 of us, then you're going to have to beat more than 400 of us. I see parallels between then and now. There must be a real movement to resist this attempt to say that people who come from another land are not one of us.
The Root: There are theories that pushing for integration was the wrong thing to do -- that if your generation had instead fought harder for "separate but equal," then African Americans would have more self-determination and power. How do you respond to that argument?
JL: I happen to believe that our society must move toward the creation of a truly multiracial democracy -- that we're one people, one family, one house. As Dr. King would put it, we must learn to live together as brothers and sisters or we perish as fools. I would love to see the day come when we can lay down the burden of race and just be human.

Wait, I thought gay marriage was the new civil rights battle? These libs need to get their stories straight.
See Dilbert, this is what happens when you keep clinging to your God n Guns...you miss vital movements of social justice...< barf-off>LOL
It’s said that history repeats it self if so I would like to see Ike’s plan repeated Operation Wetback.
Ping!
Oh they do love to blur the lines between ILLEGAL and LEGAL, that really works for them. Then to top that off play the race card every chance they get. That race card is getting pretty worn by now, it’s going to have to be taken out of play at some point. Civil Rights? That is the biggest joke of all- people here illegally should have NO rights. Go to any country ILLEGALLY or even in most cases legally and demand your Civil Rights and see how far it gets you.
As anchor "babies" and U.S. citizens, they are going to be a massive voting block in 10 or less years.
But they aren't. That's why we have a nation, borders and the concept of citizenship.
I've been warning of this on this forum for a long time: once you confuse race with nationality, you deconstruct the notion of nationhood.
If you do, then the logic of it takes you here: the borders are racist and discriminatory, because they discriminate against people who are not of our nationality.
This is the insanity of the civil rights acts and amendments. Taken to their logical end, it means that we have no right to impede anyone who wants to invade our land - and it will then become not our land.
Invasion is not a civil right.
They aren't going to waste time with voting when they're the majority. They will simply seize power with violence if necessary. Why would they bother respecting rules made by people who aren't like them?
Civil rights, my aunt Tilly.....these disturbed individuals have a serious self-esteem problem. They don't need amnesty---they need psychiatric treatment. All liberals are mentally ill. And with Lewis' asinine statement, add him to the top of the 'needs padded cell asap' list.
To compare segregation and Civil Rights violations of US CITIZENS, to Illegal Aliens and their overt violation of our immigration laws (aka; Flaunting) you have to have a few screws loose.
Or you are nothing but a low-life agitator, an outright liar and race-baiter, and just trying to stir up trouble. Like say ..... a nice Race Riot or two. And maybe get the aggrieved parties to burn down a few buildings while they're at it.
And speaking of LIARS, wasn't it this same Rep John Lewis who said he was spat on and called a ni__er when that group of Dems walked up the Capitol steps when the Tea Party was there? But oddly with a gazillion cameras and microphones covering it, none of his accusations could be confirmed? Yep. I think it was him.
Oh well, I guess he needs a new deck of Race Cards. His appears to be all worn out.
” Invasion is not a civil right. “
Well put.
